2001 PORSCHE (986) BOXSTER S

This 2001 Porsche Boxster S (986) is a well-maintained example of the first generation of the beautifully balanced mid-engined roadster. Its water-cooled 3.2-litre flat six was rebuilt in 2007, replacing the IMS bearing and resolving one of the 986 series’ more notable foibles, and it drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 208,614 km.

Manufactured in 2001 and delivered new to Australia, the car was first registered in March, 2001. It has been in the current owner’s hands since 2012 and has been well-cared for, with a solid service schedule carried out and documented.

The body panels appear to be damage-free and present well. There is very minor stone chipping on the front bumper commensurate with the mileage, and some scratching underneath from sitting low to the ground. There is also a small scrape on the passenger side wheel arch, a chip in a tail light and some minor damage to the Boxster badge. The Boxster S sits on 18-inch ‘Turbo twist’ wheels, which are in good shape, showing some minor marks on the passenger side. The soft top is functional and in good condition, presenting with some slight wear in the canvas at the folding points.

The interior upholstery and trim is also in good shape. Its leather has aged handsomely and is in smart condition throughout. There is very modest wear on the driver’s seat bolster where owners have climbed in and out. The owner notes that the driver’s side seat adjuster handle is loose, and the trim on the driver’s side door handle has worn through in places. Small nicks and marks are present on some of the other trim, and the rubberised coating on the stereo head unit rotary knobs is beginning to deteriorate.

The Boxster’s maintenance record is reportedly up-to-date and it recently had a full service including a new flywheel and four tyres. It has also received a new clutch in the past 12 months. The car has been in the care of Autohaus Hamilton, which performed routine scheduled Porsche servicing on the car, as well as a recent compression and leakage test, and bore scope check of the engine ahead of sale.

In 2007, the engine was rebuilt and the IMS bearing – often found to cause issues in this generation of Porsche – was replaced with a larger dual row factory 997-type shaft and bearing. The vendor notes that the car has been extremely reliable in their ownership.

All original books, keys, plus the tool kit will be included in the sale. A detailed service history record is also present.

During the car’s most recent pink slip check, it passed with flying colours and no warnings or advisories. It sits on new Michelin 225/40 ZR 18 tyres.

This 2001 Porsche Boxster S benefits from an engine rebuild replacing the potentially problematic IMS bearing, as well as 20 years of diligent care.
