This Land Rover Defender 90 ‘Tomb Raider’ is a rare and well-equipped special edition of an automotive icon, presented in excellent condition. It is powered by the 2.5-litre Td5 diesel engine, producing around 122hp and 221lb-ft of torque, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 67,763 miles from new.

One just 250 examples understood to have been built to celebrate the Defender’s starring role in the ‘Tomb Raider’ film of the era, these limited edition cars were all finished in Bonatti Grey with extensive chequer-plate body cladding. A roof pack and support bar frame was also fitted, along with a row of spotlights, side protection runners, and Pewter Grey alloy wheels. Inside, the seats were trimmed in specially commissioned ‘Quest’ fabric as standard, and aluminium components were used for some of the controls. A unique Tomb Raider plaque was also present on the front wing.

First registered in November 2001, there are just three previous registered keepers on the log book. The seller has only owned the Defender for a few months, but is offering the car for sale to free up space for other cars to be added to his collection.

The bodywork is in superb condition, with no obvious dents or damage to any panels. The car also benefits from the fitment of a new galvanised chassis, which was installed in 2016 as part of a substantial refurbishment programme on the vehicle - and is documented by a photo album included with the history file. Its Bonatti Grey paint is in very good order, with a smooth and even finish, and the chequer-plate trims are also looking very smart. The 16-inch ‘Boost’ alloy wheels retain their bespoke Pewter Grey finish with polished rims, while the headlights have been upgraded to more powerful items.

In the cabin, the ‘Quest’ upholstery that mimics the chequer-plate panels is in great shape, with no rips or tears, and only modest wear commensurate with the age and mileage. The aluminium gear and transfer box knobs have some visible wear and patina, but in general the interior presents well for a car approaching its 20th birthday. There are four further flip-down seats in the rear compartment, trimmed in the same upholstery and in equally good condition. An aftermarket Pioneer head unit with Bluetooth connectivity is also installed.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out in July 2018, with an engine oil service, as well as a replacement fuel filter. Previous recent services were also carried out in 2016 and 2015. The wheels are fitted with Avon Ranger ATT tyres in size 235/85 R16 all round, which are in excellent condition with plenty of tread.

The most recent MOT test took place on 5 February 2020 at 67,561 miles, which resulted in a pass with a few advisories. The tester noted that the bump stops were missing, and that there was corrosion present on the rear mount sections. A non-excessive oil leak was also recorded.

This Land Rover Defender 90 ‘Tomb Raider’ Limited Edition is a smart example of a beloved 4x4, with a utility-focused appearance and benefitting from a recent brand-new galvanised chassis. It drives and runs well, and save for some minor upgrades to the lighting and in-car entertainment, remains in its original factory specification. A fine addition to any collection of Land Rovers or modern classics, this is a rare opportunity and not to be missed.
