2000 MITSUBISHI EVO VI TOMMI MAKINEN

This 2000 Mitsubishi Evo VI is a smart example of the sought-after WRC-inspired Tommi Mäkinen Edition road car, presented in very good condition and with relatively low mileage. Under the bonnet sits a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine – originally producing 276bhp, but now uprated to around 460bhp – coupled with a five-speed manual transmission.

The odometer currently indicates 96,266, though this is understood to be a mix of kilometres and miles. Having spoken to the previous owner during the auction, the vendor understands that it was reading in kilometres up to around 49,000 km (30,447 miles), and thereafter has been reading in miles. Therefore, the total mileage is believed to be approximately 77,713 miles (125,067 km).

Introduced in 1999 to commemorate Finnish rally driver Tommi Mäkinen's fourth consecutive WRC Driver’s Championship win, this signature Evo boasted a number of upgrades over the standard car, such as a redesigned bodykit, 10mm lower suspension, revised dampers, a helical front limited-slip differential, and a faster-spooling titanium turbocharger.

Originally delivered overseas, it was imported and re-registered in the UK in July 2005. It has been with its current keeper for the last year, and is equipped with aftermarket adjustable coil-over suspension, Brembo brakes, a turbocharger from the Evo IX, and an upgraded clutch. The engine is also reported to have been fully rebuilt.

The bodywork of this Evo remains neat and tidy, with flush shut lines and smooth panels. However, the vendor indicates a small clip is needed for the offside top of the front bumper, as it hangs down slightly. The white paintwork is described as being in excellent condition, and though the vendor has indicated a small scrape on the bottom of the front bumper, this is commensurate with the mileage and would be easy to repair. The finish is thought to be original, and also has Mitsubishi and Ralliart decals. The car rides on white Enkei alloy wheels, which remain in very good order.

Moving inside, this Tommi Mäkinen Edition’s Recaro seats are trimmed in a combination of black and red cloth upholstery, presenting in excellent condition throughout and with minimal wear to contact points such as the bolsters and seat bottoms. An aftermarket Pioneer stereo has been installed which, along with the original switchgear, is reported to be in good working order, with no electrical issues.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in July 2019 at 95,777 km, where the engine oil and filters were changed and a new offside rear wheel bearing was fitted. Prior to this, in July 2018, the AYC (Active Yaw Control) system was flushed and changed, and a new offside front steering rack boot was fitted.

In January 2018, the engine oil, transmission oil and filters were replaced, while the vendor indicates the cambelt was last renewed at 75,498 km. Accompanying the vehicle is a history of MOT documentation and invoices for numerous parts and maintenance.

The most recent MOT test was on 3 February 2020 at 95,700 km, which resulted in a clean pass, with the tester noting only the presence of protective under trays. The wheels come wrapped with a set of Uniroyal tyres, which are reported to be one year old and with 5mm of tread remaining.

This Mitsubishi Evo VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition is a superb example of the special edition rally-inspired road car, which remains in impressive condition, and incorporates some discreet modifications to significantly enhance the performance. An agile and powerful road car, this Evo VI would make a fantastic addition to a collection of modern classics, and is a wonderful all-season practical performance car.
