2000 MERCEDES-BENZ (R129) SL 280

This Mercedes-Benz SL280 is a fantastic example of the R129-generation roadster, which benefits from the late model updates and a solid service history. Under the bonnet is a 201bhp, 2.8-litre V6 petrol engine, driving the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. The odometer reads 80,150 miles from new.

This UK-market R129 was first registered on 15 March 2000 and it has been in the vendor’s ownership for nearly 12 years. It has been cherished by them, with regular servicing, and including many remedial and pre-emptive works carried out.

Finished in classic Brilliant Silver, the bodywork presents in excellent order with no major blemishes thanks to a bonnet, roof and A-pillar respray. Some stone chips are visible to bonnet and front bumper, while a small scratch on the lower section of the front bumper on its offside is also visible. Both front wings have also previously been replaced to rectify corrosion. The vendor adds that two small stone chips are also seen on the nearside front wing, but overall the impression is that of a very well-cared for example. A replacement front grille has also been fitted as the original had discoloured.

The electrically-operated soft top presents well and motors up and down without fault, while a body-coloured hard top and stand are also included in the sale. Riding on its factory-fitted 17-inch alloy wheels, these are in excellent condition with no kerbing damage or scratches visible.

The restrained and elegant design of the exterior is mirrored inside the SL’s cabin, which shows only minimal wear on the electrically adjustable heated front seats. Some staining is also visible on the grey seat belts, but nothing out of the ordinary for an example of this age.

All of the main controls and systems remain in working order, including the Mercedes-Benz CD player and climate control system, with no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. The vendor adds that while the electric retracting aerial does operate, it leaves approximately six inches of aerial standing proud on the nearside rear wing, instead of retracting fully into the bodywork. The outside temperature sensors can also give an inaccurate reading.

The most recent service was carried out on 18 March 2021 by Top Tech Auto Services Ltd. During this service, the car’s battery, brakes, fluids, gearbox, exhaust, suspension and lights were all inspected, and levels topped up as required. The engine oil and filter were also replaced.

This example has also had a number of parts replaced due to age or wear, including the exhaust system and exhaust manifold, underbonnet insulation, air-conditioning control unit, and odometer bulbs.

The most recent MOT test was on 18 March 2021 at 80,111 miles, with no advisories recorded. Riding on Continental SportContact tyres all round, these have approximately 3mm of tread remaining, with the oldest dated to 2017.
