1999 PEUGEOT 306 RALLYE

KEY FACTS

  • A highly original example of Peugeot’s featherweight hot hatch, benefitting from recent maintenance and presented in very good overall condition.
  • Under the bonnet is the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre inline-four, producing 167bhp and driving the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
  • Based on the GTI-6, the 306 Rallye weighed 65kg less through the replacement of the leather trim with lighter cloth seats and the removal of the air conditioning system, electric windows and mirrors, front fog lights and sound deadening.
  • Only 500 examples were produced, of which only 200 were finished in Bianca White.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This 306 Rallye is finished with Bianca White paintwork over a black cloth interior featuring the ‘Rallye’ tricolour on the seat inserts, and rides on its original 15-inch ‘Cyclone’ alloy wheels.
  • The original factory specification is supplemented by the fitment of an Alpine stereo, connected to a boot-mounted six-dics MP3 CD autochanger.
  • Its odometer was replaced in 2016 when it read approximately 111,000 miles. It has since done around 6,500 miles on the replacement odometer (which read approximately 90,000 miles when it was installed), and the original unit comes with the car.
  • The car is accompanied by the original owner’s manual and service book, as well as various invoices and MOT test certificates.

CONDITION

  • There was previously some minor bodywork damage to the nearside rear corner of the car, which has been professionally repaired. The car is HPI clear.
  • The Bianca White paintwork is in good condition overall, with some blemishes commensurate with the age and mileage of the vehicle. These include some stone chips to the lower edge of the front bumper, a small chip beneath the passenger-side door handle, some stone chips across the bonnet and wing mirrors, a minor scuff to the nearside corner of the front bumper, and a small paint bubble on the driver’s door handle.
  • At the rear, the coating has peeled off the rear wiper, though this would be straightforward to fix.
  • The vendor notes that one of the door locks was previously damaged and the surrounding paintwork has since been repaired, however the lock surround would benefit from further cosmetic attention.
  • The original black cloth-trimmed interior presents well given the car’s use, with wear and tear on the driver’s seat bolsters and light wear on the leather-wrapped gear knob.
  • The owner reports that there are no warning lights on the dashboard, but that the oil temperature readout does not function, the clock screen has bled, and the interior light does not function automatically when the doors are open – though it can be switched manually. While all fan speeds are working correctly, there is no cold air delivery via the temperature controls.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 22 February 2021 at 96,392 miles, which the car passed after some attention was paid to the catalytic converter, drive shaft joint, chassis rails and a few bulbs. Advisories were noted for an oil leak, dampness on the brake servo and pipe, wear on the nearside front lower suspension arm pin or bush, slight seepage from the steering rack damper, and play in the nearside steering rack inner joint.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 306 Rallye was most recently serviced in February 2021 at 96,392 miles by J Long Motor Engineer, who carried out an MOT test and performed repairs to the offside front floor and nearside bulkhead, as well as the front section of the exhaust system and the CV gaiter.
  • Prior to this, J Long fitted a new genuine clutch cable in December 2020 at 96,353 miles, and Kings Street Garage replaced a rear brake pipe and CV boot in January 2020 at 96,256 miles.
  • Additionally, Kings Street Garage serviced the car in December 2019, when they supplied and replaced the heater matrix and fitted a new timing belt and water pump. In January 2019, they also fitted a new steering rack gaiter, replaced the rear brake pipe, stripped and refitted the brake load sensing valve, and topped up the engine oil.
  • During the current keeper’s ownership, other maintenance has included replacement of the starter motor, the fitment of an upgraded radiator, a polish and paintwork repair, and the replacement of all four tyres with new Toyo T1-Rs.
  • In 2008, the cylinder head was stripped and refitted using new gaskets by Peugeot specialist CG Cars.
  • The car was stored off the road between 2012 and 2016. While there is a gap in the service record below, there are six MOT tests during this period that document the mileage.

SUMMARY

This Peugeot 306 Rallye is a sound example of the iconic 1990s lightweight hot hatch, combining an involving chassis with a powerful and free-revving engine. While there are some minor jobs that can be attended to in due course, this 306 has been regularly serviced throughout its life. It would make a fun addition to any collection of modern classics.
