1999 PEUGEOT 306 RALLYE

This Peugeot 306 Rallye is a well-maintained and sympathetically upgraded example of the millennium-era French hot hatch. Under the bonnet lies a 2.0-litre inline-four producing 167bhp and 145 lb-ft of torque, driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox and an aftermarket Quaife limited-slip differential. The odometer indicates 89,244 miles, and the car is for sale at No Reserve.

This example has been in the hands of the current vendor for the past year. A UK-market exclusive, the 306 Rallye was mechanically identical to the GTI-6, but with a stripped-out specification which removed the fog lights, air-conditioning, sunroof, electric windows and temperature sensor.

Only 500 models were produced, with only 200 of these in the Cherry Red seen here. This example, registered on 31 December 1999, has been the subject of a full engine bay restoration and detail, as well as a full respray.

The Peugeot’s glossy red finish is in showroom-fresh condition thanks to the recent refurbishment. Completed using the correct grade of paint and primers, this was then followed up with a two-day detailing session using 3M and Fusso products. The vendor estimates that approximately 250 hours has been spent getting the 306 into this condition, with each piece of plastic exterior trim having been cleaned and polished prior to refitment. The correct model-specific decals have been fitted, while the light lenses and glass are also free of damage. Riding on aftermarket Compomotive 15-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, these give the 306 a motorsport vibe and are in great shape.

Inside, the Rallye retains its unique cloth upholstery, which has some minor wear and discolouration visible to the driver’s seat, but otherwise it presents very well. The door cards show age-related patina, though the steering wheel and gear knob remain in good condition. There are no known faults with any of the switchgear or electrics.

This 306 has been well maintained and recently overhauled, with the last service completed by the current owner in March 2021, when the oil filter, engine oil, spark plugs and coil pack were replaced. The inlet manifold was also removed, sandblasted and repainted in 2K lacquer, along with the fuel rail which also received new injector O-rings. The fuel pressure regulator was also replaced, with a number of new gaskets fitted. 

In January 2021, a faulty crank sensor was replaced, while on 6 October 2017, over £2,500 was spent on the car by specialists Pug1Off. This included comprehensive repairs of the front jacking points, as well as replacement of the top mounts on all four dampers. The front brakes, brake lines and various suspension parts were replaced, as detailed in the invoices seen in the gallery.

The cambelt, auxiliary belt and water pump were all replaced in January 2017. Prior to the vendor’s ownership, the gearbox was rebuilt and upgraded with a Quaife limited-slip differential by renowned Peugeot specialist Skip Brown Cars.

The most recent MOT test was on 20 January 2021 at 89,174 miles. This was a first-time pass with zero advisories.

Offering a rare opportunity to acquire a UK-market only hot hatch benefiting from significant recent work; this Peugeot 306 Rallye is in great condition and features some discerning upgrades. As a true driver’s car, it is happiest on undulating and twisty B-roads, but it would also be a credit to any collection of modern classics.
