1999 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 TD5

KEY FACTS

  • A sound example of the iconic off-roader, refinished in Zambezi Silver and with a raft of cosmetic and performance modifications.
  • Under the bonnet is a modified 2.5-litre TD5 engine, now producing around 180bhp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission with four-wheel drive.
  • The odometer currently displays 41,058 miles, however this was replaced in 2016, and the true mileage is believed to be 112,571 miles.
  • This Defender has been comprehensively rebuilt over the last five years, only covering around 4,000 miles since 2016.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • During the modification process, the exterior was resprayed from blue to Zambezi Silver and fitted with wider wheel arches, LED Halo DRL headlamps, Puma doors and bonnet, anodised black chequer-plate bonnet covers, KBX grilles and light surrounds, side and front rock sliders, a Pro Trac undertray, a set of rear steps, a tow bar, an ORE single-arm wheel carrier and various gloss black trim pieces.
  • The vehicle’s TD5 engine now features an ‘Alive’ ECU remap, a Turbo Technics VGT turbocharger, an Allisport MM intercooler, an uprated fuel pump, a K&N air filter and a side-exit straight-through stainless-steel exhaust.
  • Inside, the cabin is equipped with sport bucket seats, two rear benches, acoustic headlining, upgraded dashboard trims, electric windows, a new turbo gauge, a sports steering wheel and a Bluetooth-compatible Kenwood stereo.
  • It rides on a set of 18-inch five-spoke ‘Nemesis’ alloy wheels, which are finished in gloss black and are in great shape. They are shod with BFGoodrich A/T tyres, which have plenty of life left.
  • There is a 2-inch ride height increase via a Bilstein full suspension kit, plus Bilstein steering damper. Stopping power is improved with cross-drilled and grooved brake discs all around.
  • Security features include central locking, an X-Defend pedal lock, a GPS tracker, an immobiliser, and a full exterior security bolt kit.
  • The car will be accompanied by a raft of maintenance invoices and preparation for a CTEK battery charger.

CONDITION

  • There is a small dent above the nearside headlight, but otherwise there is no known bodywork damage.
  • The resprayed Zambezi Silver finish is in good condition, as shown in the gallery below.
  • The exterior trim also presents well, though there are two small cracks in the black headlight surround.
  • Inside, there is a small tear on the front of the central storage box, but the retrimmed black leather seats are in great shape overall, with only slight creases on their surfaces.
  • All of the controls are in good working order.
  • The most recent MOT test was conducted on 23 July 2021, which resulted in a first-time pass with no warnings or advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This Defender’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in June 2021 at an indicated 41,032 miles (112,545 miles), when technicians at Derbyshire Vehicle Repair Centre Ltd changed the engine oil and filter.
  • In June 2020, technicians at Derby 4x4 changed the engine, gearbox, transfer box and differential oils, as well as replacing the filters, coolant and brake fluid. A fuel leak was repaired, and the fuel pressure regulator was replaced. Technicians also installed a heavy duty double Cardan-equipped propshaft, along with a reconditioned steering box.

SUMMARY

This Land Rover Defender 90 Hard Top is a customised example of the iconic 4x4, with an uprated turbodiesel engine and various styling upgrades. Having covered only 4,000 miles since 2016, it is now ready to stretch its legs on the open road, though it could also make a fun companion for any off-road expedition as well.
