1998 NISSAN PULSAR VZ-R SERIES II

This 1998 Nissan Pulsar VZ-R Series II is a well-maintained and well-presented modern classic hot hatch. It is powered by a 1.6-litre DOHC SR16VE inline-four, producing 175hp / 129kW at 7800rpm, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 167,226 km.

The particular VZ-R shown here was one of the first Series-II vehicles to roll off the Oppama Plant production line in November 1998. It presents in original condition, with some tasteful modifications to unlock the potential of the chassis and driveline. If sold within NSW, the optional ‘JDM Style’ number plate ‘00 VZR’ can be included in sale.

Its factory VZ-R body kit immediately sets the car apart as one of the Pulsar flagship performance models. The paintwork and body are reported to be in excellent condition, with no previous accident damage. No stone chips are visible around the front end or in the headlight lenses, and the car is enhanced by an original ‘90s Lucino grille badge. The upgraded feature piece at the rear is the iconic twin-post spoiler from the homologated N1 special – an extremely rare OEM part. There is some wear around the front lip spoiler, and around the driver’s side exterior door handle, as well as some marks on both the driver’s and passenger’s exterior door pillar.

The car rides on 15-inch Enkei RPF-1 alloy wheels, which are in very good order. Sitting slightly lower on aftermarket BC Racing BR-Series coilovers, the handling is optimised to a fast road setup, allowing the chassis to be fully exploited. The original suspension can also be included in sale if the buyer wishes.

The cabin features original seats front and rear, in excellent condition with only minor signs of wear showing on the driver's side. Its carpets are original and in good shape, further protected by Nissan floor mats throughout. The dashboard plastics are in excellent condition, with no visible fading or cracking. There is a small split in the driver’s side door trim arm rest, and minor wear on the steering wheel, consistent with the vehicle’s age and mileage.

A recent addition of a Sony double-DIN head unit brings Bluetooth audio connectivity, without dominating the interior with screens. All interior switches are in good working condition, with no warning lights on the dashboard. Its electric front windows are operational, as are the fold-out door mirrors.

The original matching-numbers blue-top SR16VE engine is reported to be in excellent condition, with routine servicing throughout its life. The last service was performed by Complete Car Care imported vehicle specialists at 167,260 km. Other recent mechanical work has included replacement of the clutch by JTP Automotive, renewal of the engine and gearbox mounts, along with fresh oils and filters. The VZ-R has also had work completed to the gear linkage system, including a new Nissan factory shifter, complete replacement of links and a new gear knob.

Two keys and some service history paperwork is present, with all recent service documentation retained in a custom-made VZ-R document pouch.

This Nissan Pulsar VZ-R Series II is an exciting 1990s hot hatch, which was never officially imported to Australia when new, so remains a very rare sight on the road. Presented in very good mechanical order, with smart paintwork, and benefiting from some choice aftermarket additions, this is a sought-after modern classic that is also great fun to drive.
