This Mercedes-Benz SL280 is a very smart example of the marque’s enduring R129-generation roadster, seen here with relatively low mileage and an understated colourway. Under the bonnet is the 201bhp 2.8-litre V6 petrol engine, driving the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. The odometer reads 68,578 miles from new.

Initially registered on 18 May 1998, this UK-market SL has evidently been cherished throughout its life. The current vendor has owned the car for the last year, having purchased it from a previous owner who had the SL in his family’s possession for the past 14 years. Said to have always been garaged when not in use, it is also reported to have benefited from regular maintenance to date.

The angular Bruno Sacco-designed lines of the SL are complimented by its Obsidian Black finish. Only a handful of stone chips are apparent on the front end, with the overall finish exhibiting a deep and even hue throughout. The vendor adds that both front wings were previously replaced due to rust, with invoices for this included in the car’s history file.

Some minor chipping and scratching is seen at the removable hardtop’s docking points on the rear deck, while the boot-mounted plastic rear brake light is fading. Slight marks are also visible on the rear tailgate, and there is some slight bubbling at the base of the A-pillars. Overall, this SL still presents in very good order for its age.

The electrically-operated soft top roof motors up and down smoothly, latching snugly closed against the windscreen. The soft top’s plastic rear screen is free of cracking, while there is minor fraying visible on the fabric in places. This SL280 is also supplied with the desirable detachable hardtop, which fits well and is in great shape. Riding on 18-inch AMG Monoblock alloy wheels, these are also in good condition.

Inside, the stylish interior remains in original condition, with the only signs of usage to be seen on the driver’s seat bolsters. Both electrically operated and heated seats are fully operational, and both the textured steering wheel and gear knob remain in excellent condition.

This example retains its original 10-disc CD stereo system, which remains in as-new condition. The vendor adds that all electrical accessories including the electrically-adjustable mirrors, electric windows and HVAC controls are fully operational, and a minor mark on the dashboard above the central vents is the only real blemish of note. During the vendor’s ownership, a replacement aerial has also been fitted to rectify a common failure point in SLs of this era. A new battery has also been fitted.

The most recent MOT test was on 11 August 2020 at 68,578 miles. This resulted in a first-time pass, with minor defects noted for the condition of the front ball joint dust covers and an advisory for the nearside front shock absorber. It is testament to the condition of this car that its last recorded MOT fail was over a decade ago, in February 2010.

Combining the brand’s legendary reputation for reliability and timeless styling, this Mercedes-Benz SL280 is a compelling example of a late model year R129 roadster.
