1998 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 300 TDI

This Land Rover Defender 90 is a smart example of the iconic British 4x4, which is fresh from a full exterior restoration. It is powered by the famously robust 2.5-litre 300Tdi inline-four, which drives all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 153,396 miles from new.

First registered in June 1998, it was acquired by its last private keeper five years ago, and it is now offered for sale by the trade on their behalf. 

Today, the bodywork is in great shape, and has never suffered from any damage to the seller’s knowledge. Freshly resprayed, its blue finish is now pristine, reported to be free of any notable chips, scratches or blemishes. Metal trim items including the front bumper and rear light cappings have been re-galvanised and appear as-new. Furthermore, the canvas roof, lights, windscreen and rubber seals have also been replaced, and the chassis has been given a Waxoyl treatment to protect it from the elements. This Defender rides on a new set of steel wheels, which are in excellent condition, with no visible marks or scuffs their white painted surfaces. 

In the cabin, this Defender provides an extra touch of luxury, having been fitted with new seats from Land Rover specialist Masai 4x4, which feature tan surfaces and black backs, accented by cream piping. A wood-rimmed Astrali steering wheel further enhances this off-roader’s classic aesthetic, and the rest of the cabin features a pleasing light patina, with some general light marks on the dashboard plastics and seat box. 

In the rear, hardwearing and attractive English Oak battens help to protect the load area from dents and scratches, while providing an attractive contrast to the blue paintwork. The vehicle’s relatively limited selection of buttons, switches and electrical items are reported to work without fault, and there are no warning lights. 

Reported to be in good mechanical order, this hardy utility vehicle is fresh from a service at Moss Motors, where technicians changed all of the lubricant oils, as well as the power steering pump and hose, and also renewed a rear wheel bearing and the rear brake pads. The cappings were also re-galvanised; however, its service history prior to this is not recorded. 

Its most recent MOT test was conducted on 15 September 2020 at 153,387 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with advisories noting a minor oil leak and damage to the nearside bottom of the windscreen, though the latter has since been replaced. The vendor states that all four tyres are almost new, and are in excellent condition. 

Fresh from an extensive cosmetic refurbishment and service, this Land Rover Defender 90 is an excellent example of the iconic ‘go-anywhere’ 4x4. Powered by the dependable 300Tdi engine and benefitting from a cleaned and protected chassis, it is ready to be put into duty immediately, and should prove to be a reliable and capable companion for years to come.
