This Toyota Chaser Tourer V TRD Sports is an excellent example of the popular Japanese Domestic Market performance sedan. Under the bonnet is a 2.5-litre 1JZ-GTE turbocharged straight-six, producing around 280hp, which is coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads approximately 105,500km.
The final iteration of the JDM Toyota Chaser, the 6th Generation JZX100 was produced between 1996 and 2001. The high-performance model, its front-engine rear-wheel drive layout made it an incredibly popular vehicle in professional drifting competition and it also competed in the Japanese Touring Car Championship. Also featuring in the video game series Gran Turismo saw the global popularity of the Chaser soar, and it was privately imported by many enthusiasts to countries around the globe.
The exterior of the vehicle presents in very good condition and has been well maintained by its owners in Japan and Australia. The Toyota is finished in the striking factory Toyota 040 Super White II and features the limited edition TRD Sports front grille, front bar, rear wing, and the factory-fitted TRD badges and decals. The owner reports the base of each mirror and the leading edge of the filler cap have had their paint touched up. They also report evidence of the rear bumper lip being repaired where it tucks inside the wheel arch, a scratch on the roof above the B-pillar, a small chip on the driver's side rear wing trim piece and that the 'Sports' section of the grille badge is missing.
Inside, the vehicle is in excellent condition, with the signature Dark Blue and Grey upholstery in very good shape for its age. The driver is presented with the TRD Sports steering wheel and gear knob, with a host of factory carbon trim pieces adding to the comfortable yet performance-focused environment. The rear seats, floor mats and door cards all present well, and there are no warning lights on the dashboard. The owner reports some minor scratching on the shift surround and centre console from the seat buckle, and 'yellowing' of some of the carbon trim commensurate with its age, plus minor lifting evident around the passenger airbag. The defroster cover trim has been replaced with a Julius carbon-fibre item.
Under the bonnet is the variable valve timing version of Toyota's famed 1JZ-GTE turbocharged engine that featured more torque in the 1997 model, having already reached the agreed voluntary limit set by the Japanese Automobile Manufacturer's Association regarding horsepower, at a notional 280bhp. Coupled to a five-speed manual transmission the performance is impressive and engaging, and the TRD fitted exhaust system elicits a richer sound than the standard item. The current owner has replaced the air filter element, the coolant overflow bottle, front studs, brake discs and pads, as well as the shift bushings. To rectify worn-out factory dampers, the vehicle has been fitted with MCA Pro-Comfort suspension.
The vehicle has an extensive service history from new, all logged to accompany the factory manual. The most recent service was carried out on 7 October 2020 at Japan Imports with all fluids and filters replaced and the air-conditioning re-gassed. This work was carried out with the odometer reading 101,000km and records show the cam belt was changed at 80,530km. The vehicle underwent a safety inspection in October 2020 with no advisories or warnings issued. Offered for sale with the vehicle are three original keys, Toyota owner's and service manuals, factory TRD paperwork, and the original spare wheel and tool kit.
This Toyota Chaser V TRD Sports is a well-presented and well-maintained example of the iconic four-door JDM sport sedan in a sought-after configuration. It offers an engaging driving experience with renowned reliability, and with TRD credentials it is perhaps destined to become a wonderful weekend toy, or an impressive addition to any Japanese car collection.
