1997 MASERATI GHIBLI GT

This Maserati Ghibli GT is a rare Italian performance car, which is presented in very good condition throughout and in a handsome factory colour scheme. Under the bonnet is a 2.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 280bhp, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer shows just 58,362 miles from new.

First registered in August 1997, the car was supplied via dealer Kinsey Jones in Bury. A history summary in the file suggests it has been well-maintained throughout its life, and in 2008 had a top-end engine rebuild carried out by leading Maserati specialist Bill McGrath. The seller has owned the car for around 18 months.

The exterior of the car is described by the seller as being in very good condition for its age. As can be appreciated from the photos below, there are a small marks and imperfections in the paint finish, but the seller notes no evidence of any accident damage to the panels. The body trims are all present and correct, and the car rides on the original 17-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, which are in great shape.

The sumptuous beige leather interior presents very well indeed, with the seats retaining their shape, and with only modest wear commensurate with the mileage. The air-conditioning control panel was replaced in 2008 due to a fault, and the stereo has been upgraded to a Sony CD system. All of the switchgear is reported to work as it should, with no electrical faults.

This vehicle was last given a service in August 2020 at MDL Ferrari, including renewal of all fluids, filters, spark plugs and auxiliary belts, as well as a full health check. Prior to this it had been brought out of storage and rejuvenated in early 2019 by A1 Restorations as part of the ‘Salvage Hunters’ TV programme. A printed summary of the history in the file details previous maintenance and MOTs from 1997 through to 2013.

In 2012, at around 49,000 miles, this Ghibli GT had a new water pump fitted, along with replacement brake disc and pads all round, and a new stainless-steel exhaust system. The timing chains were renewed in 2011 at approximately 48,000 miles – per the manufacturer schedule – at Maserati specialist Autoshield. The top-end rebuild in 2008 included re-facing of the cylinder heads, all new gaskets, new belts, a new expansion tank, exhaust valves, vacuum unions, and oil pressure and water temperature senders.

The last MOT was carried out on 11 February 2019 at 57,768 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. It will need a new certificate before taking to the road again. The wheels are wrapped in Continental tyres, which all appear to have a good level of tread remaining.

This vehicle has a well-documented service history, and the stamped maintenance book remains with the car. There are numerous receipts for work carried out in the file, and an excellent printed record of the mileage history. The vehicle also comes with the original handbooks.

This Maserati Ghibli GT is rare and genuinely fast Italian grand tourer, which is presented in very good cosmetic and mechanical order. Undoubtedly a modern classic, this 1990s performance car would make a fine road trip companion, or could be saved to relish on sunny weekends.

All cars and motorbikes on Collecting Cars are run through an online HPI check. This vehicle shows no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and has no finance owing.
