1997 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 300 TDI

This 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 300Tdi is a well-maintained and discerningly upgraded example of the classic 4x4, finished in a Heritage-inspired colour scheme. Under the bonnet is the trusty 2.5-litre 300Tdi engine, driving all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. This particular example shows 117,414 miles from new.

First registered in March 1997, this Defender 90 has provided rugged and reliable transportation throughout its lifetime. In more recent years, it has been resprayed to the Grassmere Green finish seen here, resulting in a stunning external finish and head-turning road presence.

The bodywork and paint is reported to be in excellent condition all around the car. The contrasting black areas such as the grilles, bumpers and roof are also in great shape. Its wheel arches have been widened, and a set of heavy duty modular steel wheels has been added, ensuring that this Defender 90 will draw attention wherever it goes. The wheels have also been sprayed to match the bodywork, while the vehicle has a circa 10mm suspension drop with aftermarket springs.

Inside, the front seats are in good condition, with only modest wear, and the rear seats have been re-trimmed in black vinyl and plaid cloth. The same plaid fabric has also been applied to the headlining above the front seats. While there are signs of use and wear commensurate with the age and mileage, overall this Defender still presents very well. The original darker green hue can be seen on the original bulkhead. All systems are reported to be working as intended, with no known electrical faults.

Thanks to the famously robust 300Tdi engine under the bonnet, very little in the way of mechanical remedial work has been needed during the vendor’s ownership. The car has been well-cared for, with a number of common maintenance issues addressed. Welding has been carried out on the chassis, which is arguably to be expected for any Defender of this age, while the seat boxes and fuel tank have both been replaced.

In addition to this, the suspension has been upgraded with a set of Bilstein dampers. Some detailed photos of the underbody are also included in the gallery, which show the good condition of the chassis and running gear. The most recent service was carried out in April 2019 with some remedial work in August 2020, during which the oil seals were replaced. It also benefits from a new clutch fitted in September 2019, and a new exhaust rear section in August 2020. There is also a very good history file dating back to 2005.

The latest MOT test occurred during July 2020, with the result being a clean pass with no advisories. All four wheels have been fitted with new Toyo M/T Open Country tyres, while the spare is shod in a BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A tyre.
