1996 PORSCHE 911 (993) TURBO

This 1996 Porsche 993 Turbo is a very smart example of an iconic performance car, which marks the last series of air-cooled 911s. It is powered by a 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six, which sends 402bhp to all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The car’s odometer currently shows 6,202 miles, though the accurate total is currently 66,930 miles (107,713 km), with plenty of maintenance documentation to support the mileage.

Supplied by Oman’s official Porsche distributor in January 1996, the car is now understood to have had only one previous keeper in the Middle East, before it was sold to the second owner in 2004 by the same supplying dealer – and this second owner kept the car until 2020. The car was serviced nine times by Porsche Muscat before leaving Oman in 2007, when it was exported by the owner at the time back to his home in the UK. The current owner acquired the car last year, but is now selling it to reduce his collection prior to a house purchase.

The bodywork of this 993 is described as being in excellent original condition. Its black paint finish presents with a few chips, notably to the front bumper and nearside door edge, but is generally in very good order having undergone a windows-out respray in 2011 to rectify some fading from the Oman sunshine. During the vendor’s ownership, the rear reflector panel was replaced with an OEM item as the original had cracked. The 911 rides on the original 18-inch silver-finished ‘Turbo Twist’ alloy wheels, which remain in excellent condition, with just minor blemishes.

Moving to the interior, the seats are finished with grey ruffled leather upholstery, which presents with some minor creasing and discolouration commensurate with the car’s mileage. The dashboard and door caps are trimmed in black leather, and the vendor has also replaced some original walnut inlays with more reserved leather items. The central door card panels, gear knob, handbrake grip, steering wheel upper and lower portions, and dashboard trim strip and instrument bezel were all replaced with Porsche OEM items in black or grey leather. Overall, the cabin is in very good condition for the age and mileage.

In July 2004, the speedometer was changed by Porsche Muscat in Oman, which is fully documented down to the specific mileage, as illustrated in the service summary below. An aftermarket Bergvill F/X audio power harness is installed, which comes with a new Continental stereo unit that has USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Also fitted is a Bergvill F/X climate control fan, which replaces the CCU fan on the original air-conditioning system. During the most recent maintenance visit, the sunroof switch panel was replaced, as was one plastic door edge trim.

Its last service visit was during the vendor’s ownership to Stephen J Howard (Top Gear) at Thames Valley, which included a full oil change, as well as renewal of the engine mounts. Prior to this, in August 2020 at 66,000 miles, technicians at D.H. Price Motors on the Isle of Wight changed the engine oil and filter, before re-fitting an original intercooler refurbished by Radtec Cooling, and changing all auxiliary and V-belts.

In November 2009 at 61,000 miles, Northway Porsche in Reading fitted two new K-24 turbos and intake pipes, new brake pads, shims and sensors all round, as well as new drive belts - at a cost of some £9,000. Alongside this, the distributor cap, rotor arm, both outer CV boots and both rear toe arms were replaced.

The most recent MOT test was on 19 January 2021 at an indicated 6,136 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The vendor states that all four tyres have plenty of tread left.

Accompanying the vehicle is the original leather book pouch, the owner’s handbook, stamped guarantee and service book, complete with a folder containing numerous receipts for maintenance. The car also has all the original export certificates, transport and insurance invoices.

This Porsche 911 Turbo is a great example of the 993 generation, which benefits from a respray in 2011 and some very recent cosmetic and mechanical attention. For the first 13 years in the UK, it was always kept in a ‘Carcoon’ storage system indoors when not in use, and has been kept in very good order by the current owner as well. This well-maintained example could be an ideal route into 993 Turbo ownership, and is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
