1996 PEUGEOT 106 RALLYE S1 - 14,117 MILES

This Peugeot 106 Rallye is a very clean and low-mileage example of the sought-after lightweight hot hatch. Under the bonnet is a high-revving 1.3-litre TU2J2 inline-four, producing up to 100bhp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows just 14,117 miles from new.

Tipping the scales at just 825kg, this homologation special is a renowned no-frills driver’s car. Its front anti-roll bar is linked to the support strut by a double ball-jointed rod, and rear anti-roll bar thickness was increased compared to the earlier XSi model. There are disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear.

While more than 1,000 were originally imported to the UK, by 2003 records show that just 969 were registered. Today, around one third of that number are recorded on public DVLA data streams, and fewer than 100 examples of the S1 Rallye are believed to be roadworthy and licensed. First registered on 16 January 1996, this 106 Rallye has just three previous keepers on the V5C, and was acquired by the vendor two years ago.

The bodywork of this 106 Rallye presents very well, with no known prior damage to any of the panels. Indeed, given some of the minor stone chip patterns around the plastic wheel arch extensions, and light superficial scratches in the finish, the Cherry Red paint may well be entirely original. There is a very minor dent in the bonnet, and a small patch of surface rust behind the engine bay that would benefit from some attention, but otherwise the shell and panels appear in remarkably good condition for their age. The car rides on the correct 14-inch white painted Michelin Sport steel wheels.

Inside, the upholstery is in superb condition throughout, commensurate with the very low mileage. The cloth has some discolouration from age and UV exposure, but there are no rips, holes, or other damage in the fabric. Its vinyl seat backs are also in great shape, as are the carpets, door cards, and the dashboard plastics. The steering wheel and gear knob appear to be original and are undamaged; while an aftermarket Kenwood stereo head unit has been installed. It also has a manual winding sunroof, which is working as it should. There are no known electrical foibles, other than the fact that the fan sometimes only works on the highest setting.

Its last scheduled maintenance was in March 2021 at 14,100 miles, when Merlin Motors carried out an engine oil service, and also replaced the camshaft timing belt and the fan belt.

The most recent MOT test was on 2 March 2021 at 14,109 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with the only note being that the wiper blades were worn – though it is understood that these were replaced during the service mentioned above. Its wheels are shod in Yokohama S306 tyres, which are date-coded to 2002, but have ample tread.

This Peugeot 106 Rallye represents a rare opportunity to acquire a cult modern classic with very low mileage, and which presents in highly original condition. It could be a great candidate to be taken on and perfected to concours-quality level, but is ready to be wrung out and thoroughly enjoyed on winding B-roads as intended.
