1996 MERCEDES-BENZ (R129) SL500 - 33,000 MILES

This Mercedes-Benz SL500 is an original, low-mileage and low-ownership example of the modern classic cruiser, combining crisp styling with solid build quality. Its engine is the 5.0-litre V8 producing 322bhp, driving the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. The odometer indicates 33,000 miles from new.

First registered on 1 August 1996, this SL500 appears to have initially been put into service as a demonstrator for main dealer Jacksons on Guernsey, until being sold to its first private owner in January 1997. The original buff log book records the next ownership change in June 2004. It is understood that the seller is the third private owner; having acquired the car eight years ago after it was imported and first registered in the UK in 2012.

In production from 1989 until 2001, the R129-generation SL set new standards in comfort, ride quality and performance in its class. A generous standard specification included electric windows, mirrors, seats and a powered convertible hood.

Resplendent in Brilliant Silver metallic, the SL exhibits a superb shine, which the seller advises is down to a full respray carried out in 2016. There are tight shut lines throughout, suggesting that it retains original panels, while the original matching hardtop fits tightly to the body, with no imperfections.

The black fabric soft top is in very good order with no rips or tears to the fabric. The badging, light lenses and brightwork are in similarly good condition. This SL500 retains its original eight-spoke alloy wheels with a polished finish, and these present well with no kerbing marks or damage visible.

Moving inside, this elegant convertible is finished with cream leather. Believed to be entirely original, it presents in good condition, with no rips or tears in the upholstery. There are small marks and signs of use evident on the driver’s door card, but in general the cabin presents superbly. All of the switchgear and electrical items are said to work correctly, including the original Blaupunkt stereo that remains fitted in the centre console.

As is to be expected given the low mileage, this SL500 does not have full annual servicing history, but is reported to have been well-maintained throughout its life. The last service was carried out in September 2016 by Slough Motor Company, incorporating an oil and filter service, with replacement brake fluid and coolant. Shortly before leaving Guernsey, it was given a major service by Jacksons at approximately 32,000 miles that included renewal of the engine oil, filter, brake fluid, spark plugs, pollen filter and fuel filter.

The most recent MOT test was on 28 September 2016 at 32,904 miles. This resulted in a first-time pass, with just one advisory regarding a slightly perished sidewall on the nearside rear tyre. The Mercedes rides on a mix of Continental and Michelin tyres, which are reported to have a good level of tread remaining. The vendor states that a fresh 12-month MOT certificate will be secured for the Mercedes ahead of the handover to the next owner.

Combining elegant design with low mileage and a desirable colour palette, this Mercedes-Benz SL500 is an appealing example of this modern classic. It would make an enjoyable weekend cruiser or a welcome addition to any marque-specific collection, and is ready to drive and enjoy.
