1996 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPORTSTER 1200 – STREET TRACKER

KEY FACTS

• A striking hooligan-class flat-track build, inspired by the work of the great Charlie Stockwell; this Sportster 1200 was completely stripped and customised between 2019 and 2020.
• It retains the original 1200cc V-twin engine, which has been upgraded with a Stage 1 Dynojet jet kit, a Stage 2 Vance and Hines hi-flo air cleaner kit, and a refurbished CV carburettor, coupled to a five-speed transmission.
• Wherever possible, it has been fitted with original S&S Cycle and Saddlemen parts sourced from the US, and the result is a true head-turning machine.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• Acquired by the seller in October 2019, the bike was then transformed over the next seven months, with some 250 hours invested in converting it to the classic ‘big twin’ Flat Tracker style, at an all-in cost of around £8,000.
• The Sportster 1200 was stripped, two 19-inch refurbished and gold painted Harley Dyna wheels were fitted, and new Maxxis DTR1 medium tyres were added.
• Front forks from a 2007 Yamaha R6 were serviced and installed, along with R6 Gold Spot callipers, new headset bearings and new wheel bearings and seals. Two Suzuki Hayabusa 310mm brake discs were modified to fit the 19-inch Dyna hub. New HEL custom brake lines were also fitted.
• Bespoke spacers were machined to fit the Dyna hub to the R6 fork setup, including width conversion, hub and front axle spacers to fit R6 bearings, and front axle O/Ds.
• A machined R6 bottom yoke was fitted to the Harley stem, along with a CNC billet top yoke, Rox risers, and flat track style bars.
• At the rear, two YSS 350mm adjustable shocks were added, bespoke spacers were again machined to fit the 19-inch Dyna hub to the rear, along with a new disc and rear sprocket position adjustment, axle spacers and a calliper spacer. A 2017 Sportster rear brake calliper and disc were installed.
• The 1200cc engine top end was stripped, new piston rings and gaskets were fitted, and it was rebuilt and repainted. The gear case cover and sprocket cover were both chopped and painted, with a new gasket and oil seal for the former. The primary cover was also repainted, with a new gasket and seal.
• New throttle cables were installed, along with a chain conversion with new JT 48T/21T sprockets in high carbon steel, and a new JT nickel X-ring Chain. An S&S Hooligan exhaust and heatshield were sourced from the US and fitted, along with two 2.25-inch drag pipe baffles.
• A Saddlemen eliminator seat unit was fabricated to fit the 1996 frame, along with an ABS rear mudguard. The fuel tank and seat unit were repainted in gloss Onyx Black by a professional paint shop, while a white lightning bolt custom design was also added, with each lightning bolt laser cut and applied individually. Three coats of 2pac clear lacquer were then added to seal the finish.
• Finishing touches to the exterior included M.Blaze LED pin indicators front and rear, revised electrics and load reducers, a Motokay square headlight, new Yuasa battery, and number boards and motocross style footpegs - 115 being the race number at the Lydden Hill Bike Shed Festival event in 2019.
• Accompanying the bike is the original owner’s manual, stamped service book, log book, workshop manual, and two keys. There are also receipts for all recent work done on the original bike, along with further details and photos of the build, plus engineering drawings for machining work.

CONDITION

• There is no known prior damage to the original frame or bodywork.
• When the seller acquired the bike in 2019, the speedometer casing had been repaired with bonding after perhaps coming loose at some point. However, it does not affect the function in any way, and the repair is only visible from the underside.
• The frame has only been repainted in a few areas where the steering lock was removed and at the site of the original rear mud guard and pillion supports. The rest of the frame is in excellent condition, as is the custom paintwork.
• The black diamond-stitched seat cover had a 5mm split in the leather, but this has been repaired, and it presents in very good order today.
• There are no known electrical faults.
• The most recent MOT test was on 14 June 2021 at 17,171 miles, which was a first-time pass, with advisories for a slightly loose foot peg and noisy exhaust - both since rectified.

SERVICE HISTORY

• The most recent service was in August 2021 at 17,171 miles, when Brat Pack Bikes Ltd carried out an engine oil and filter change, and attended to play in the rear wheel bearing.
• In January 2020 at 17,065 miles, the bike had a full mechanical rebuild as part of the customisation, having been in storage for the previous three years.

SUMMARY

This Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 ‘Hoonigan’ Custom is a fantastic bespoke machine that has been converted to the flat tracker style with a raft of choice components. Mixing a rebuilt and fettled original motor with desirable parts from S&S and Saddlemen, and forks and brakes from Yamaha, this custom is an appealing blend of styles that draws the right kind of attention wherever it goes. A great bike for weekend blasts, it would also be a welcome addition to any number of meets and shows.
