This Honda NSX Type R is a lightweight version of the marque’s acclaimed 1990s sports car, presented in superb condition throughout, and representing the genesis point of the storied ‘Type R’ nameplate. Under the engine lid is a 3.0-litre naturally aspirated V6, producing around 270bhp and 210lb-ft, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 46,934 km (29,163 miles).

To create the Type R, engineers took a standard coupe and set about a programme of significant weight reduction. The sound deadening material was removed, along with the traction control, motorised leather seats, and the original wheels. In their place, lightweight carbon-kevlar bucket seats were fitted, trimmed in red suede cloth, along with Enkei forged alloy wheels to reduce unsprung mass. The electric windows were retained, along with the forward and back electric seat control, while the gear knob was hewn from titanium.

In total, around 120kg was shed from the weight of the standard NSX, and it also received a number of mechanical upgrades. Its 3.0-litre engine had a blueprinted and balanced crankshaft assembly carried out to motorsport-grade standards, while the final drive ratio was increased to boost acceleration, and stiffer suspension was installed.

Just 483 examples of the NSX Type R are understood to have been built, exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. This car is stated to have had just a single owner in Japan, before it was exported to its second owner one year ago, who is a collector based in Hong Kong. The NSX has not been registered in Hong Kong, but is accompanied by the original export certificate. It remains original and unmodified throughout, with the exception of HKS suspension.

The all-aluminium, semi-monocoque body is in excellent condition, with no panel damage, and with flush shut lines all around the car. Its Championship White paint finish is believed to be original, and presents with a handful of very minor stone chips around the front bumper and along the bottom of the sills. It rides on the seven-spoke Enkei wheels, in 16-inch fitment at the front and 17-inch at the rear, which are in superb condition, and also finished in Championship White.

Stepping inside, the lightweight Recaro seats give this NSX-R an instantly more focused ambience compared to the standard car, and the red cloth upholstery remains in excellent condition, with only slight signs of use commensurate with the low mileage. The fabric around the dashboard and door panels is accented by red stitching, and is all in very good order, and the car remains entirely original. It was specified with the optional air-conditioning system, and the vendor reports no faults with any electrics, and no warning lights. Some of the original plastic even remains on parts of the trim to keep it in pristine condition.

The last scheduled maintenance was at approximately 46,500km in Hong Kong, when the engine oil and oil filter were renewed. Prior to this, it was seen by a Honda dealer in Japan in April 2016 at 45,988km. Since arriving with its next owner, this NSX Type R has been stored in a collection and not road registered.

The wheels are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza tyres, which are around two years old and still have approximately 6mm of tread. Accompanying the car is the original Honda Japan service book, the export certificate, and two original keys.

This Honda NSX Type R is an incredibly rare special edition of a landmark performance car. A late production model, which the vendor states is rust-free and in absolutely superb condition throughout, this would make a sensational addition to any collection of sports cars or modern classics.
