This Ford Escort RS Cosworth ‘Lux’ is a smart example of the iconic bewinged hot hatch of the early 1990s. Under the vented bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged Cosworth YBT engine, producing 227bhp and 224lb-ft of torque in standard form. This power is transmitted to all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 39,663 miles.

First registered on 13 November 1995, this Escort RS Cosworth is an original, UK-market car. Following a period in storage between 2005 and 2015, the car made its way to the current vendor in 2018, having recorded only four previous owners prior to that.

Presented in its original colour of Petrol Blue, the Cosworth has a deep shine to the finish. There is a small paint chip on the window surround above the driver’s door mirror, as well as some minor stone chipping to the front end. The seller advises that minor dents on the doors and boot lid were rectified in 2019, as well as some paint blistering, with the car having been professionally resprayed in the relevant areas.

Supporting the mileage indicated on the odometer, the condition of the glass, light lenses and badging is all excellent, as befitting a car which has been regularly garaged. The Escort retains its five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels, which are in good condition with no scratches on their faces and only minor kerbing to both nearside wheels.

Inside, the cabin is a familiar blend of Escort fittings and motorsport-inspired upgrades. Contact points including the steering wheel, aftermarket gear knob and handbrake are in good condition, with the dash-mounted boost gauge and Cosworth plaque adding a dose of sporting intent.

The Recaro bucket seats found in ‘Lux’ models such as this one are in good condition with no rips or tears to the upholstery, with the only damage of note being creasing to both front seats. The optional sunroof is also in working condition.

The most recent service was undertaken at 39,375 miles by Dolans’ Garage of Grimsby, entailing a vehicle check-over and oil and filter change. Prior to this, an oil change was carried out in May 2019, and prior to this in August 2016, when the spark plugs were also changed.

During the owner’s tenure, the car has also received two new brake callipers, a replacement water pump and thermostat. In addition, the gearshift bushes have also been replaced, with new wiper blades and a replacement catalytic converter also installed.

The most recent MOT test was on 14 August 2020 at 39,552 miles, which resulted in a pass following remedial works to the windscreen wipers, handbrake, headlight beam aim and exhaust. Wearing Falken and Nexen tyres, these are in good condition with ample tread remaining.

Now looking for its next enthusiast owner, this Escort RS Cosworth will be sold with its service history booklet featuring seven stamps, six servicing receipts, and a number of old MOT certificates. The online MOT history also confirms the period spent off the road between 2005 and 2015.

Combining rally pedigree with extravagant looks and old-school power delivery, this Ford Escort RS Cosworth presents as a highly original example of a childhood hero for many. While it would be a welcome addition to any collection, it begs to be enjoyed on twisty B-roads in homage to the rally superstars it owes its existence to.

All UK-registered cars and motorbikes on Collecting Cars are run through an online HPI check. This vehicle shows no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and has no finance owing.
