1995 AUDI RS2 - 49,668 MILES

This 1995 Audi 80 Avant RS2 is a stunning example of the cult high-performance estate car, which has been very well maintained, and which boasts an intriguing international history. Power comes from the 2.2-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine, producing around 311bhp and 302lb-ft of torque, and is driven through all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and the Torsen-type Quattro system. The odometer shows just 49,668 miles.

The RS2 was the result of cooperation between Audi and Porsche, taking the 80 Avant model as the basis and developing it into a giant-killing estate car. It was built at Porsche’s Rossle-Bau manufacturing facility in Zuffenhausen, with significant upgrades made to the familiar Audi engine, and with the braking and suspension systems enhanced with Porsche-designed components.

Fewer than 3,000 examples were delivered worldwide, and original UK-supplied right-hand drive cars are exceptionally rare, with only 180 units built. The RS2 was also the first model in Audi’s now legendary ‘RS’ performance line.

This example was delivered to the UK and first registered in April 1995, and has five previous keepers on the V5C. In 2014, it was acquired by a member of a prominent motorsport family in North America, who purchased the RS2 to participate in a cross-country road trip across New Zealand given its right-hand drive layout.

It was subsequently dispatched from the UK to the other side of the world for around six months, before being transported on to North America. The car remained there for the next five years, though it was never officially exported, and returned to the UK in early 2020. In summer 2020, it was purchased by a member of the Collecting Cars team, and it has since appeared at several socially-distanced car gatherings.

The bodywork and Ragusa Green paint of this RS2 presents in superb condition, with flush shut lines and even gaps around the panels. It received some cosmetic attention upon its arrival in North America in 2015, with removal of a few small dents, plus refurbishment of the front bumper grilles. Most recently, after returning to the UK in 2020, it was treated to a respray around the front end to rectify stone chip marks. During an inspection by Audi specialist The Phirm in Surrey, technicians noted three very small crease dents in the finish, as well as a minor scuff on the offside front wing.

All of the body trims present very well, and the car remains original and unmodified throughout. The RS2's wing mirrors were borrowed from Porsche, and they remain in excellent condition. New headlight lenses sourced from Germany were fitted by CG Motorsports in Richmond, B.C. in 2015, and in November 2014 the windscreen was replaced due to delamination. Its wheels are the 17-inch ‘Cup 1’ Porsche alloys, which are in superb order.

Inside, the condition of the cabin reflects the low mileage, with virtually no wear on the full black leather seat upholstery, and only minor creasing to the bolsters. The rest of the interior trim is also in great shape, and it retains the original carbon inlays. There are no known faults, and all of the switchgear currently works as it should; however, the original code will need to be sourced to operate the radio.

The most recent routine maintenance was carried out in summer 2020, when this RS2 was sent to Audi specialist The Phirm in Surrey. Technicians carried out a full inspection, cam belt and pulley renewal, water pump service, and a comprehensive service including fresh engine and gearbox oil; replacement of the oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and pollen filter; a new set of spark plugs, renewed offside front differential seal, and repairs to the nearside rear wheel and offside front bump stop.

During the inspection The Phirm, slight corrosion was noted on the nearside rear shock absorber, rear anti-roll bar, and rear exhaust box, and there was a minor oil weep around the rear differential. While in New Zealand, it was serviced twice by Continental Cars in Auckland; first in October 2014 at 44,640 miles, and then again in December 2014 at 47,430 miles.

In the years before it left for New Zealand, this Audi was looked after by The Lion Garage in Hinckley. In 2014, at 44,634 miles, both rear upper control arms were replaced, along with the rear brake discs and pads. Four new Continental tyres were also fitted. In 2011, at 43,450 miles, the car received new front wishbone mounts, along with new front brake discs, callipers and pads, and a replacement front left strut top mount. The lower front door trims were also renewed, and repainted in Ragusa Green.

The most recent MOT test was on 10 June 2020 at 48,890 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories or defects whatsoever. The Continental tyres currently fitted are all in good condition with plenty of tread remaining.

Accompanying the car is the complete original book pack, including the stamped maintenance record, which is summarised below.

This Audi 80 Avant RS2 is an iconic performance car and a highly collectible modern classic. Finished in a handsome factory colour scheme, and with very low mileage from new, this is a compelling example of the breed, which is also presented in first-class condition. It is ready to excite and delight its next owner on the road, and must surely be one of the very best available.
