1994 TOYOTA MR2

This Toyota MR2 is a smart example of the desirable SW20 model; the acclaimed second generation car that blends everyday usability with an engaging sports car package. The mid-mounted 2.0-litre 3S-GE inline-four produces up to 163hp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission to drive the rear wheels. The odometer shows 247,727km.

In its first generation form, the MR2 was the first mid-engined mainstream production car to come out of Japan. The second-gen SW20 followed on the success of the earlier model with more streamlined styling that took inspiration from Italian sports cars of the same era.

The exterior defies the mileage and presents in very good condition, with the benefit of being finished in the stylish Caribbean Blue hue. Pop-up headlights, a removable Targa roof and the desirable Kouki twin tail light design all add to the MR2’s sporting appearance. The factory side vents give another visual indication as to the mid-engined nature of the car. Its bumpers have recently been repainted, but the owner reports the remainder of the paint to be original, with only some minor imperfections in the finish.

Inside, the black leather upholstery is all original, and is still in good condition for its age and mileage. The owner states that the driver's side seat has noticeable wear on the bolster and the passenger seat has a single cigarette burn hole. Its leather gear shift gaiter is also slightly damaged. There are small marks on some of the other cabin trims, but overall this is a well-presented modern classic. The factory fitted AM/FM radio has been replaced with a double DIN Pioneer head unit, and all of the switchgear is reported to work as it should.

Lifting the engine cover reveals the naturally aspirated variant of the 3S-GE engine. Both the engine and five-speed gearbox are original to the vehicle and the owner reports no known faults. High-quality Australian-made Simmons wheels replace the factory alloys, and add a touch of period-correct aftermarket customisation.

The car is fresh from a service in March 2021 by City Toyota Perth in Nedlands. In addition to the scheduled maintenance, the power steering fluid was replaced and a new battery fitted. The vehicle has recently had the front brake lines replaced and the owner also informs us that the timing belt will be replaced by Toyota on 11 March 2021, ready for handover to the next owner. The registration is valid until 21 June 2021, with no inspection having been required on the vehicle in the current owner's time with the car. The vehicle comes with the original tools.

This 1994 Toyota MR2 (SW20) is a solid example of the mid-engined sports car, from perhaps the golden era of Japanese performance vehicles. Presented in rare Caribbean Blue paintwork and with factory black leather upholstery, this open-top classic has a clean and stylish aesthetic that still looks handsome nearly 30 years later.
