1994 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX

KEY FACTS

  • An early, first-generation version of the iconic all-wheel-drive performance car, presented in highly original condition throughout.
  • Under the bonnet is the desirable closed-deck 2.0-litre ‘EJ20’ turbocharged flat-four, which drives all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.
  • Unmodified right down to the original Subaru tape deck, this WRX has survived the test of time relatively unscathed.
  • Subaru launched the Impreza WRX locally in 1994, making this example one of the first to officially arrive in Australia.
  • Only 591 Impreza WRXs were delivered new in its launch year, making early cars particularly significant.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This WRX is finished in the eye-catching hue of Flamy Red over a grey cloth-trimmed interior.
  • It rides on the correct set of 15-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels.
  • Factory-fitted equipment includes air conditioning, power steering, power windows and electrically adjustable door mirrors.
  • Signs of originality can be seen its early slat-type bonnet vents, correct black plastic grille and era-specific front bumper.
  • Internally, other noticeable touchpoints include its original Nardi steering wheel and gear knob, Subaru-branded stereo, and warm-up procedure instruction decals.
  • The vehicle comes with a partial service history, its original owner’s manual and supplement, and a spare set of 17-inch wheels.

CONDITION

  • There is not believed to be any substantial bodywork damage, though the vendor notes that there are multiple small dents to the car’s sides and across the bonnet, with the largest being close to the front grille.
  • The fuel filler flap has previously been replaced as the original item was damaged, and the new part’s paint colour does not perfectly match the surrounding panel.
  • Elsewhere, the Flamy Red paintwork is thought to be entirely original and is in fair overall condition, with multiple stone chips on the front bumper.
  • Inside, the interior presents in good condition for its age, with no visible rips or tears on the grey cloth-trimmed seats or the dashboard.
  • Elsewhere, the top section of the driver’s-side door trim is showing signs of wear, as are the leather-wrapped steering wheel rim and gear knob.
  • There are no known mechanical or electrical faults.
  • The most recent roadworthiness test was conducted in March 2021.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This Impreza will be accompanied by a partial service history.
  • Its last service was conducted at an odometer reading of 190,789km in September 2021 by GWT automotive. Alongside an engine oil and oil filter change, its spark plugs, air filter, and spark leads were also replaced.
  • At the same time, new rear end suspension links were fitted.
  • Prior to this, a service was carried out in March 2021. Here, its lower front control arms and right-hand side steering rack boot were replaced.

SUMMARY

This 1994 Subaru Impreza WRX is a solid, highly original example of the rally-inspired performance icon. One of only 591 home-market examples delivered in the model’s launch year, this well-maintained Impreza would make a fine addition to any collection, and could easily be brought up to a very high standard with some minor cosmetic attention.
