1994 FERRARI 348 SPIDER

This 1994 Ferrari 348 Spider is a smart example of the open-top modern classic supercar, with a strong recent maintenance record, and which is finished in a rare black-on-black colour scheme. It is powered by a 296bhp 3.4-litre quad-cam V8, which drives the rear wheels via a transversely-mounted five-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays 65,775 miles from new.

An original UK-market car, this 348 Spider was first registered in May 1994. The seller acquired the car 12 years ago, during which time they have spent over £20,000 to bring the car up to an impressive mechanical standard.

Today, the Pininfarina-designed bodywork is in very good shape, with no evidence of any prior accident damage, straight panels and even shut lines. While it is not known whether the Nero paintwork has been resprayed in the past, overall it is in good condition for its age, with various marks and blemishes, including stone chips on the nose, a scuff below the rear bumper, chips around the fuel filler flap and slight bubbling in a few places. Similarly, the exterior trim is presentable, though the distinctive taillight grilles would benefit from being repainted. The black fabric convertible hood is in very good order, and fits snugly over its frame with no rips, tears or fading. This 348 rides on a set of 18-inch five-spoke magnesium alloy wheels taken from a Ferrari 355, which have a few chips and blemishes on their silver paintwork, and which were fitted with wheel spacers in 2010.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black Connolly leather, and it shows some general signs of use in line with the car’s age, such as creases and wear on the driver’s seat, but there are no rips or tears. As is common in Ferraris of this era, the centre console’s plastic surface coating has become somewhat sticky; however, there are now a number of specialists who can correct this and bring the plastics back to an as-new appearance. The seller is not aware of any faults with the car’s buttons, switches or electrical items, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

This 348’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out by Ferrari specialist Foskers, which included replacement of the battery and a fluid check. Prior to this, Verdi performed a full engine-out service in 2018 when the timing belt and fluids were changed. During the seller’s ownership, the clutch has also been replaced, along with the alternator, and the engine was fully overhauled by Kent High Performance Cars in 2009. Other work during the vendor’s tenure is well documented by invoices in the history file.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 6 January 2021 at 65,743 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass without a single advisory. The front wheels are shod in Pirelli P Zero Rosso tyres in size 225/40 ZR18, while 265/40 ZR18 Pirelli P Zero Asimmetrico items are fitted at the rear. The seller states that all four are around five years old, and are in excellent condition.

The car will be accompanied by a detailed service history covering the vendor’s 12-year ownership, as well as the instructions and remote for its aftermarket Sony stereo.

This Ferrari 348 Spider is a tastefully specified and mechanically sound example of the marque’s first modern-era supercar, which has benefited from significant investment in maintenance over the last 12 years. While the next owner may choose to make some minor cosmetic improvements in due course, the 348’s true appeal lies in its characterful driving experience, and the Spider model makes its naturally aspirated V8 sound all the more vocal.
