1993 PORSCHE 968

This 1993 Porsche 968 is an appealing modern classic performance car, which has been upgraded to be closer to the full-blown Club Sport specification, and benefits from a thorough recent service. Under the sweeping bonnet is the all-aluminium 3.0-litre inline-four with a chip upgrade, which is driven through the rear wheels via a six-speed Getrag transmission. The odometer displays 164,220 miles from new.

An original UK-market ‘C16’ code car, this 968 was first registered in March 1993. In recent years, this example has since been re-trimmed and modified in homage to the Club Sport, with bucket seats, a roll cage in place of its rear seats, and ‘Cup 1’ alloy wheels, to name but a few items.

Having been fully resprayed in its original hue of Guards Red, this 968’s bodywork presents very well indeed, with even shut lines and no evidence of any prior accident damage. The finish is described by the vendor as being in excellent overall condition, and has a smooth and glossy appearance around the car, with minor stone chips at the front.

The exterior rubbers and seals have all been replaced, which included removal of the front and rear bumpers, side sills and rain gutters, all of which were machine-polished and ceramic coated prior to being refitted. The light lenses present well, with brake ducts fitted in place of the original fog lights and smoked side repeaters adding another custom touch. Both flanks are emblazoned with ‘Club Sport’ style decals. This 968 rides on a set of 17-inch ‘Cup 1’ alloy wheels, finished in gloss black with matching centre caps. All four are in great shape, and house bright red brake callipers.

In the cabin, this 968 has black leatherette for the door cards and black carpeting. Both of the front seats have also been changed for Recaro Pole Position bucket seats, which are clad in black fabric and present very well, with no signs of wear or damage, and which are fitted with red Schroth racing harnesses – though the original seat belts also remain. In the rear, the occasional rear seats have been deleted, and a colour-matched Guards Red roll cage has been fitted in their place, enhancing the car’s rigidity and safety.

Overall, the interior is in very good order, with a few minor age-related marks and blemishes on the door cards and lower dashboard, which are commensurate with the car’s age. While the current owner notes that the cabin heater sometimes stops and blows cold, this is believed to be caused by a sticking valve, and should be relatively straightforward to repair. All of the other switchgear works as it should, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

The car is reported to have been very well-cared for by Porsche enthusiasts. Its engine and running gear has undergone extensive work that has included replacement cam chain bearers and sprockets, and a refurbished NineX cylinder head. It has also had the infamous gearbox pinion bearing renewed. At approximately 164,000 miles, the power steering pump and belt were replaced, along with the cambelt and water pump, and the crankcase seal. All work is very well documented in the history file, which includes 16 main dealer or specialist service stamps in the book.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 6 April 2021 at 164,173 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. All four wheels are fitted with Hankook Ventus V12 Evo tyres in size 225/45 ZR17, which are in very good condition and have ample tread remaining.

The car will be accompanied by its original handbooks and two keys, as well as a book of photographs which document its refurbishment and conversion to Club Sport ‘homage’ specification.

This Porsche 968 is a smart and neatly customised example, which now more closely resembles the stripped-out Club Sport car, and which is reported to be in fine mechanical order with a recent clean MOT. It is now a compelling tribute to the lightweight edition, and is ready to drive and enjoy.
