1993 PORSCHE 911 (964) CARRERA 2 TARGA

This Porsche 964 Carrera 2 Targa is a very clean example of a superb modern classic 911, presented in an eye-catching colour scheme and with very good service history. It is powered by an air-cooled 3.6-litre flat-six engine, producing 247bhp, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 79,484 miles from new.

First registered in March 1993, this 964 was supplied by Strattons of Wilmslow. There are six previous registered keepers on the log book, and the car appears to have been well cared-for throughout its life. The current owner acquired this 911 Targa five years ago, and has enjoyed some 2,500 miles behind the wheel on warm and dry summer days.

The bodywork presents in very good order, with no signs of accident damage or rot, and with flush shut lines all around the car. Grand Prix White is the original factory hue, and the paint is in great shape, with only a few very small chips and superficial marks around the front bumper, and with a smooth and even finish across the panels. The seller notes that the vinyl covering on the Targa hood does have some minor nicks and scuffs from being handled and stored, and there are a few chips in the paint of the roll hoop.

All of the light lenses present well, and while this car has been subtly modified to have clear lenses at the front quarters and red-coloured items at the rear, the original reflectors are included in the sale - as shown in the photo gallery. The window seals and door rubbers are in good order, and the shut panels and jambs look very clean. It rides on 16-inch ‘Cup’ alloy wheels, which are in superb order. One of the Porsche crest wheel caps is missing in the photos, but a new one has since been purchased and fitted.

In the cabin, the electrically adjustable seats have been reupholstered in blue leather to match the original finish - including the white piping, which was a special factory option. The leather remains in excellent condition, with an as-new appearance. The rest of the interior trim appears entirely original, including the steering wheel and gear knob, and the dashboard and door cards are in very good order. Ahead of the driver is a full complement of VDO instruments, and there does seem to be slight deterioration of the foils over the warning lights in one of the gauges. While it left the factory with a Blaupunkt cassette deck, this has since been upgraded to a more contemporary Sony stereo and CD player, with MP3 playback and aux-in connectivity. The seller says there are no known faults with any of the switchgear or electrics.

This car’s maintenance history shows regular care and servicing throughout its life. There is a gap in the services between 2002 and 2011, but the car spent most of this time off the road - evidenced by the lack of annual MOT tests between 2005 and 2011.

Its last scheduled maintenance was in June 2019 at 79,202 miles, with an oil and filter service carried out by Alexander’s Classic and Performance Cars. The same independent workshop serviced the car in July 2017 at 78,250 miles, and before this it was looked after by Monks Autos in Southampton. Within the seller’s ownership, the fuel injection system has been overhauled with refurbished injectors, new fuel lines and spark plugs have been fitted, and the valve clearances have been reset. A drive shaft CV boot was also replaced in July 2018.

The most recent MOT test was on 12 July 2019 at 79,097 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. The wheels are shod in Pirelli P6000 tyres all round, which are in good condition with plenty of tread remaining.

Accompanying the car is the original book wallet, driver’s manual, and the stamped guarantee and maintenance record. There is also a partially complete original tool kit, space-saver spare wheel, and tyre inflator. A complete set of seven workshop manuals is also present, as well as a raft of old invoices and receipts. The car comes with two keys, and two Cobra immobiliser fobs.

This Porsche 964 Carrera 2 Targa is a cherished example of a very usable and enjoyable open-top 911. Presented with relatively low mileage, and with detailed service history, this should prove to be an eminently reliable modern classic for its next owner. Great for short weekend blasts or longer road trips alike, this unmolested air-cooled Porsche delivers a wonderful driving experience, and is ready to delight another enthusiast in the warm summer months.
