1993 MERCEDES-BENZ (W124) E220 COUPE

This Mercedes-Benz E220 is an elegant pillarless coupe presented in good order throughout, which would make a fine modern classic daily driver, or a smart weekend cruiser. Under the bonnet is a 2.2-litre inline-four petrol engine, producing around 148bhp and 155lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer shows 75,849 miles.

First registered on 27 September 1993, the UK-market car has six previous keepers on the log book, and was acquired by its most recent private owner two years ago. It is now offered for sale by the trade.

The vendor describes the bodywork as being in good condition, with no evidence of any prior damage. Its Pearl Blue metallic paint has had remedial paintwork to the driver’s side front wing, but is otherwise understood to be original, and still looks smart today. Some slight lacquer peel is present on the bumpers, while there are also some chips visible on the rear bumper. Overall, this is evidently a well-presented car. The steel wheels are fitted with original style wheel trims.

In the cabin, this E220 is upholstered in the original beige leather, which remains in excellent condition for its age. The front and rear seats are all in very good order, with only modest signs of use. The ruffled leather door trims add a touch of 1990s sophistication, as do the glossy walnut burr inlays. The car is equipped with electric windows and air-conditioning, and has a modern Pioneer stereo upgrade. Its electric sunroof tilts open, but the sliding function is not currently working. Otherwise, the interior is entirely original, and there are no other electrical foibles.

During 2020, this car has received a new offside track rod end ball joint and a wheel alignment session, as well as a new battery and a new brake master cylinder. Its last full service was in March 2019 at 75,615 miles, when the engine oil and filter were changed, all brake pipes were renewed, the body was undersealed, and four new tyres were fitted.

The most recent MOT was on 26 November 2020 at 75,838 miles, when it passed with no advisories or defects, after initially failing a week earlier on solely a worn track rod end ball joint - which was replaced as mentioned above. With limited mileage since being fitted, the tyres are still virtually as-new, with 7mm of tread.

Accompanying the car are the original handbooks, owner’s manual, stamped service booklet, all housed in the original wallet. There are also numerous invoices for maintenance carried out over the years.

This Mercedes-Benz E220 Coupe is a very smart modern classic, which the vendor states drives like new - not too hard to believe given the W124 series’ reputation for being a mechanically robust and meticulously built model.
