1993 MERCEDES-BENZ (C140) 600SEC

This 1993 Mercedes-Benz 600SEC is a rare and luxurious grand tourer, presented in smart overall condition and benefitting from a recent in-depth service. Under the bonnet is the wonderfully smooth 6.0-litre ‘M120’ V12, which produces around 402bhp and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer displays 96,009 miles from new.

The first V12-powered coupe to be offered by Mercedes-Benz, the C140-generation 600SEC was first introduced in 1993. The following year, the model was renamed as the S600 Coupé, which was in turn became the CL600 in 1996.

First registered in May 1993, this example is believed to be only of only 213 600SECs produced for the UK market. Previously kept as part of a private collection, it was mainly dry stored for around seven years, during which time it covered only 3,000 miles. It was then acquired by the seller one year ago, and has been maintained to a good standard since.

Today, the bodywork presents well, with no evidence of any significant damage and with even shut lines. The black paintwork is also in good order for its age, with the front and rear bumpers and door mirrors having recently been partly resprayed to correct various blemishes. There are some scuffs around the bottom of the front lip, and along one portion of the offside sill, plus some bubbling in the paint as shown in the gallery. The exterior trim presents well overall, and while there is some condensation build-up inside the headlight units it may be possible to rectify this by replacing the seals. This 600SEC rides on the correct set of 16-inch eight-hole alloy wheels, which were refurbished and diamond-cut by Lepsons in November 2020, and remain in excellent condition.

Stepping inside the luxuriously-trimmed cabin, the seats are upholstered in smooth cream leather, and are in very good shape overall. While there are some general age-related creases to their surfaces, there are no rips or tears to the upholstery. Elegant wood veneer trims adorn the face of the centre console and the door trims, and present well. The interior plastics are also very smart, though the seller notes that there are some small holes drilled in the side of the centre console, where a phone cradle was previously fitted.

As a flagship Mercedes-Benz, this 600SEC is particularly well-equipped, and is fitted with heated and electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, an electric sunroof and an electrically operated rear sun shade, to name only a few items. All of the car’s buttons, switches and electrical items work as they should, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

Its most recent routine maintenance was carried out in October 2020 at 95,633 miles by Mercedes-Benz specialist Regency Motor Company. A full service, this included replacement of the distributor caps and rotor arms, the spark plugs and the auxiliary belt and tensioner. Furthermore, the engine oil and filter were changed, new anti-roll bar drop links and bushes were fitted and the air-conditioning system was re-gassed. This modern classic coupe is almost entirely unmodified, and while it is believed to have an aftermarket rear silencer, this preserves the original engine note.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 29 June 2020 at 95,548 miles. This resulted in a first-time pass, and while a number of advisories were noted, the vendor states that most of these were addressed during the car’s recent service. All four wheels are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza RE040 tyres, which the seller states are in good condition and have 6-7mm of tread remaining.

This refined grand tourer will be accompanied by all of its original documents including its stamped service book and invoices for its recent maintenance.

This Mercedes-Benz 600SEC is highly original example of the rare C140-generation coupe, which benefits from a recent service and is offered for sale in good running order. While there are some minor cosmetic issues which the next owner may wish to attend to in due course, this ‘over-engineered’ modern classic is ready to be enjoyed immediately, and will make a fine companion for everything from day trips to cross-continental tours.
