1993 MAZDA FAMILIA GT-R

This 1993 Mazda Familia GT-R is an exciting hot hatch that was built for homologation purposes, which has been recently overhauled and cosmetically refreshed. Under the bonnet is a 154kW/209hp 1.8-litre turbocharged inline-four, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox that drives all four wheels via a viscous coupling system. It has been. The Mazda Familia GT-R was all about function, and there are visual upgrades and numerous unique parts throughout the car that reflect its rally-bred heritage. The aggressive front spoiler, factory-fitted with prominent Hella driving lights, is unique to this model. The nose features a trio of factory air vents. At the tail end, there’s both a top-mounted spoiler and a wing that sprouts from the middle of the hatch. This particular GT-R features factory-option sunroof, ABS and secondary rear wing.

As expected with recent attention to the paintwork, the exterior presents beautifully, with a deep and lustrous finish to the colour-matched SQ Red paint. All exterior trims are in good condition, and there is no evidence of prior damage to any of the panels. Its 16-inch OZ Racing alloys have some small scuffs and chips in the finish, so would perhaps benefit from refurbishment in due course.

With the exception of some minor damage to the artificial suede on the base of the driver’s seat, the interior is in very good condition for its age, and is believed to be all original. All gauges and instruments are in working condition, with no faults or warning lights triggered. The standard gearshift knob has been replaced with a Trust Grex unit. A factory-fit MOMO steering wheel is also present, giving this hot hatch a more tactile feel.

During the six months of current ownership, this GT-R was subject to some mechanical work comprising replacement of the front left wheel bearing, replacement of tie rod ends, an engine oil change, brake system bleed, replacement of a fuel pressure regulator, and testing and cleaning of the fuel pump and injectors. The cam belt has been replaced at some point in time, though this is not documented in the history. The gearbox was overhauled in 2019. A pod filter has been fitted, and the exhaust system is 2.5-inch mild steel.

It was last inspected for roadworthiness on 7 January 2020, with no issues reported. It sits on Yokohama tyres that are approximately five years old, mounted to period aftermarket 15-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels.

Although no original stamped service books are included, there are some receipts dated between 2016 and 2020 for maintenance commissioned by the previous owner.

This Mazda Familia GT-R is a great example of a 1990s Japanese homologation special. It is one of just 2,500 ever built, and one of 2,100 initially delivered within Japan. A rare sight on the road, it presents honestly with some notable recent refurbishment, and would make a fun weekend toy for carving through your favourite back roads.
