1992 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (MK2) GTI 8V

This Volkswagen Golf GTI MkII represents a superb opportunity to acquire a highly original example of this iconic German hot hatch, retaining all of its original body panels and interior trim. It is powered by the 110bhp 8v 1.8-litre inline-four, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. With extensive service history and low ownership, this example is well positioned to revive the nostalgia of early ‘90s motoring.

First registered on 6 April 1992, this car was supplied by the VW main dealer in Farnham, Surrey, as shown on the original invoice that is part of an extensive history file with the vehicle. This Golf GTI has had little use over the past decade, with just 4,583 miles being added since 2009. Owned by the vendor for a year, the vehicle has had just three previous owners, with the second owner holding onto car for 17 years between 1999 and 2016.

Presented in its original Tornado Red colour scheme, the paintwork is believed to be entirely original and is described as being in fair condition. While the paintwork is overall bright and the flanks display straight panel work, closer inspection shows a number of areas of flaking lacquer which is most prominent on the driver’s side and bonnet. The vendor also points out some fading on the passenger side.

This face-lifted example features the ‘big bumpers’, BBS multi-spoke alloy wheels, clear front indicator lenses and smoked rear light clusters, giving this GTI a clean and stylish profile. While there are some scuff marks on the corners of the bumpers, the wheels are in very good condition. A stainless steel exhaust system is also fitted.

Inside, the original rainbow and grey cloth trim is bright, clean and described as being in excellent condition by the vendor. High-contact points, such as the steering wheel and driver’s seat display signs of wear, but are in good condition considering the mileage. The only known fault is LCD bleed on the clock / MFA display in the centre of the driver’s binnacle. Factory-fitted electric front windows and manual sunroof are working as they should. The door shuts, sunroof and boot aperture also present very well. There is a Clifford immobiliser system, as well as an aftermarket DAB radio unit.

The second owner who kept the car until 2016 regularly self-serviced this GTI, but kept nearly every receipt during his tenure with the car. It therefore presents with a good maintenance history. The last scheduled maintenance was at approximately 149,000 miles by Wollaston BMW, where it was offered as a fundraising car for their chosen charity. There will be an oil change service done for the purchaser upon completion of sale and before the handover.

During the vendor’s ownership, the heater matrix has been replaced, as well as the fuel pump and ignition coil. Within the last four years, the previous owner commissioned some light mechanical refurbishment, which included new engine mounts, attention to the brakes, and a cambelt replacement service.

The most recent MOT was on 11 December 2019 at 149,027 miles, which resulted in a pass with minor advisories regarding slightly insecure side repeater lenses, and a missing buckle cover for the central rear seat belt – though these items have subsequently been replaced by the current owner. A fresh 12-month MOT certificate will be supplied ready for the next owner. The tyres are described by the vendor as being fitted in 2019 and of a budget brand, with 5mm or more tread remaining.

With a desirable specification and being in very smart and unmolested condition, the vendor states that the originality of this VW Golf GTI makes it stand out from other examples. Combined with low ownership and some larger mechanical jobs carried out in recent years, this MkII Golf GTI is a great value route to modern classic car ownership.
