1992 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (MK2) GTI 16V

KEY FACTS

• A smart example of the modern classic hot hatch, presented in impressive condition and benefitting from a number of well-judged performance modifications.
• Under the bonnet is the 137bhp 1.8-litre, 16-valve inline-four, which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• This ‘big-bumper’ Golf GTI left the factory finished in Tornado Red, with ‘Rainbow’ cloth upholstery, and is equipped with a sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, electric windows and central locking.
• During its previous keeper’s ownership, the car was modified to ‘club sport’ specifications, which included removal of the rear seats and the fitment of carbon-fibre Recaro front seats and wide BBS RS wheels.
• After being acquired by the seller, it has since been returned to largely standard cosmetic order, and now features its original interior and the correct set of BBS RA alloy wheels, which are unmarked.
• The GTI’s performance has been lightly enhanced via a number of carefully-selected modifications. These include a TSR performance cylinder head, which was rebuilt in 2005, KW ST XTA adjustable suspension with Powerflex polyurethane bushes, uprated anti-roll bars, and a full Milltek exhaust system.
• Furthermore, the bonnet and boot lid have been replaced with lightweight carbon-fibre panels, with the latter featuring a polycarbonate rear screen, while the front fog lights have been replaced with vents for improved brake cooling.
• The car will be supplied with its original handbook and service book, which was stamped from its delivery to Stourbridge VW until the year 2000. Additional paperwork documents some of the car’s service history from the year 2000 until 2020.
• The seller is also including the car’s original steel boot lid, gas struts, central locking module and rear screen – though the original boot lid requires some corrosion repairs if the next owner wishes to refit it.
• A Cobra remote immobilizer was fitted in 2005. There is only one fob for the car but these are easily sourced should another be required.

CONDITION

• No bodywork damage.
• As noted above, this GTI’s original bonnet and boot lid have been replaced with lightweight carbon-fibre items. In addition, the fuel-filler panel has been replaced, while the front wiper blank has been filled and the rear quarter-panel seams have been removed, giving the car a cleaner look and removing common corrosion areas.
• Having been treated to a full, glass-out respray by Reflex Auto Design, the Tornado Red finish is in fantastic condition. While there are a few minor blemishes, including stone chips on the trim strip below the front grille, a small area of corrosion on the offside of the engine bay, minor bubbling at the bottom of the driver’s-side A-pillar and an indentation on the driver’s-side door mirror, these are small issues.
• Inside, the cabin is very smart indeed. During the seller’s ownership, the driver’s seat’s outer bolster has previously been recovered, and there are no notable signs of wear to the upholstery.
• There are no known electrical or mechanical faults. However, the carbon-fibre boot lid does not work with the central locking system, and has to be held open as it is not fitted with gas struts. However, the original items are included in the sale.
• This hot hatch’s last MOT test was conducted on 11 May 2021 at 179,750 miles. While the car initially failed on 27 April 2021 due to problems with the full beam headlamp switch sticking and missing rear seat belt stalks (which were present but hidden beneath the rear seat), these issues were rectified. It subsequently passed with advisories for slight play in the rear wheel bearings and some corrosion on the nearside brake pipe.

SERVICE HISTORY

• This GTI’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out by the seller (a mechanical engineer by trade) in March 2019 at 178,976 miles. A comprehensive service, this comprised an oil and filter change, as well as replacement of the hoses with Samco silicone items, fitment of an uprated aluminium radiator, and replacement of a number of other items including the oil cooler, water pump, header tank, cam cover gasket, injector seals, distributor cap, HT leads and spark plugs.
• As part of this work, in 2019 VW specialist David Mylett Motor Engineers also replaced the timing belt and changed the brake fluid.
• More recently during the seller’s ownership the tyres have been replaced with new Toyo Proxes T1R items, the ignition amplifier and fuel filter have been changed, and a leaking rear brake calliper was also replaced.

This three-door Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V is a sought-after modern classic hot hatch, which is presented in very good order throughout.
