1992 PORSCHE 968 COUPE

This beautifully maintained Porsche 968 is a stunning example, despite having covered a six-figure mileage. The last of Porsche’s front-engined, rear-wheel-drive coupes, it’s powered by a 3.0-litre, four-cylinder motor that produces around 250bhp. The odometer shows 133,261 miles.

This 968 was first registered on August 1, 1992, and it has since passed through the hands of several owners, including the former Porsche Club of Great Britain 968 Register assistant secretary. The current keeper has owned the vehicle for a year.

For a vehicle of this age, the exterior is in stunning condition, with Grand Prix White paintwork and white alloy wheels. Some small blemishes can be found on the wheel arches, as shown in the supplied images, while a couple of minor stone chips can be found below the front right-hand headlight on the wing where it meets the front bumper. The lower vent of the front PU itself has two blemishes, which can also be seen in the pictures.

Inside, the upholstery is also in fabulous condition, with little wear evident on the seat bolsters. In fact, the only evidence that this car has covered more than 130,000 miles is the minor wear found at the top of the steering wheel. What’s more impressive is that the cabin is believed to be original, with no apparent evidence of retrimming. There is, however, a Porsche CR22 radio that is believed to be from a slightly later model, but it looks at home in the 968’s dashboard. Everything functions as it should, with no switchgear faults or dashboard warning lights.

The last service was carried out on December 19, 2018, at 132,084 miles. Porsche specialist NineX Motorsport replaced the front left steering arm, adjusted the front toe and tracking. The company also adjusted the clutch pedal, bled the clutch system and bedded in the clutch, which had been replaced a month earlier. More recently, however, the owner changed the engine oil and filter after buying the car in November 2019. This was carried out just 650 miles after a full engine rebuild.

The engine rebuild was carried out on November 30, 2018, when Northway Porsche replaced a cylinder liner, as well as fitting new piston rings, main bearings and all the gaskets. Earlier that year, the car received a new Varta Silver battery, which came with a five-year warranty, after NineX Motorsport had performed a service and belt check, changed the gearbox oil and replaced the front bump stops, as well as the front and rear shock absorbers.

Several upgrades have also been fitted, including a full Cargraphic stainless steel exhaust system, a reusable K&N air filter and an uprated front anti-roll bar. The anti-roll bar is a genuine Porsche part, built for the Clubsport model.

The most recent MOT test was on September 15, 2020, at 133,254 miles, which resulted in a clean pass. The car is currently wearing Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrical tyres with matching date codes, which were fitted in 2017. The tyres have covered just over 2,000 miles, but the owner says they show few signs of wear.

Extensive paperwork is included with the vehicle, including the original Porsche document wallet, fully stamped maintenance handbook and operating instructions. The service guarantee and operating manual for the CR22 radio are also thrown in.

The Porsche Club of Great Britain says the 968 is among the rarest and best-built Porsches ever made, and this example would back that up. It’s in great condition for its age and mileage, and no-expense-spared maintenance means it has plenty of life left in it. Although it probably wouldn’t take much to put this car in concours condition, it’s a machine that deserves to be savoured on the road.
