1992 PORSCHE 911 (964) CARRERA 4

This Porsche 964 Carrera 4 is a subtly modified example of a celebrated 911, presented in a rare factory colour, and with an extensive service history record. Power comes from the air-cooled 3.6-litre flat-six engine, producing around 247bhp and 228lb-ft of torque, driving all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 140,795 miles.

First registered in January 1992, this 964 has evidently been enjoyed as intended, but it has also been well maintained, with Porsche specialist RPM Technik looking after it in recent years. The seller acquired the car in February 2017, and has covered around 3,000 miles behind the wheel.

This car left the factory finished in Horizon Blue, with an interior in light grey leather for the seats and door panels, with dark blue piping, and dark blue leather for the dashboard and door caps. An electric sunroof was also fitted, along with air-conditioning, two speakers on the rear shelf, and a rear screen wiper.

While largely original throughout, the car has been discreetly upgraded with Bilstein B6 dampers and H&R coil springs, as well as a G-pipe exhaust delete to enhance the aural character of the flat-six. In the cabin, there is a Becker Cascade head unit with sat-nav, Bluetooth, and iPod connectivity, as well as an aftermarket amplifier and higher quality speakers in the original locations. A Momo Prototipo steering wheel and boss has also been fitted, along with a Sigma Cat1 alarm system.

This 911 presents very well, with its Horizon Blue paintwork reported to be in good condition, and the vendor noting some stone chips around the front end. A thorough review of the professional photos below reveals a few very small imperfections in the finish, but overall this 964 Carrera 4 looks every inch the cherished 1990s poster car.

The car was detailed and its paint given an application of Gtechniq Ceramic Protection in 2017 with a five-year warranty, which is valid until January 2022. It sits on the original ‘Design 90’ alloy wheels, which have some minor paint bubbling in the silver finish and a few small chips around the rims, but no unsightly kerbing grazes.

Inside, the light grey upholstery appears to be entirely original, worn with age and use, but still presenting in generally good order. There are surface cracks and some discolouration on the driver’s seat in particular, while the front and rear passenger seats have evidently seen less use. The leather on the door panels looks smart, though the plastic door pulls have yellowed slightly over time. The leather trim around the Momo steering wheel is in great shape, and gives the cabin a more sporting ambience. The vendor reports no warning lights on the dashboard, with the only non-functioning item being the air-conditioning – though the normal hot and cold blower still works.

Its last scheduled maintenance was in September 2020 at 140,753 miles, carried out by specialist RPM Technik. This comprised an oil and filter change, fresh brake fluid, and replacement of the reversing light switch. Prior to this, other recent services were in April 2019 at 140,556 miles and January 2018 at 138,568 miles - both also at RPM. During the seller’s ownership, the rocker cover gaskets have been renewed, along with the offside wheel arch oil pipe and the rubber sleeve for the engine bay heater pipe.

The most recent MOT test was on 8 September 2020 at 140,753 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. In fact, over the last 14 years covering some 24,000 miles on the road, this 964 has only failed an MOT test once, which was for a faulty offside rear fog lamp in 2012. The wheels are shod in a set of Michelin Pilot Exalto tyres, which all have 5mm or more tread remaining.

Accompanying the car is the original owner’s book pack, including the driver’s manual and the stamped service record. There are two service books present, as the first was misplaced by a previous owner before luckily finding it again.A large history folder is also present, with invoices, receipts and MOT certificates going back to the early 2000s. There is also a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, instructions for stereo and alarm, two keys and alarm fobs, and the original tool roll.

This Porsche 964 Carrera 4 is an eminently usable example of a great 911, which bridges the divide between the classic-era models and the more contemporary design of the 993 onwards. Its maintenance history indicates that it has been well cared-for throughout its life, and it is now ready to delight a new owner with its characterful analogue driving experience and glorious air-cooled soundtrack.
