1992 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.6

This 1992 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 is a highly original, mechanically-refreshed example of the iconic Gallic hot hatch. Featuring a rev-hungry 1.6-litre inline-four engine producing around 115bhp, this power reaches the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer reads 137,651 miles from new.

First registered on 17 June 1992, this UK-market 205 has had four owners from new. The current vendor has owned, maintained and cherished this hot hatch for 15 years, keeping it in fine fettle with annual oil changes.

Presented in the rare shade of Steel Grey, the Peugeot has previously had a full glass-out respray, and now presents in very good condition throughout, with no signs of lacquer peel or discolouration. All of the exterior plastic trims were also renewed – with the exception of the badges and sunroof surround. There are minor stone chips on the front valance, but this car still looks very smart on the road.

The bodywork has good shut lines, while the vendor notes there is just a small car park ding on the driver’s door, which is only visible in certain light conditions. Wearing its original 14-inch Speedline wheels all round, these are in good condition with very minor kerbing marks. The vendor also notes that the floor was slightly damaged by a jack in the past due to a clumsy tyre fitter, but the floorpan has since been repaired and fully undersealed.

Inside, this entertaining hot hatch retains largely original features in good condition. This model benefits from the rare full-width factory sunroof, with working vacuum and no leaks. Contact points including the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever are free of damage, while the half-leather seats are from a 1.9 GTI model and have replaced the cloth originals. The driver’s seat stitching is loose at the seams, with bolster wear apparent on both front seats.

The vendor also notes that the ashtray is currently held shut with Blu-Tak, so would benefit from repair or replacement, and that there is a small crack on the instrument binnacle. The indicator stalk does not always self-cancel, though the vendor is including a replacement stalk in the sale, which may remedy it. A Sony MP3 stereo head unit has also been fitted to improve audio quality.

This Peugeot has enjoyed regular preventative and scheduled maintenance throughout its life to date. The most recent work was carried out on 25 August 2020 by CG Cars Leicester. This entailed replacement of a driveshaft gaiter, strip down and rebuild of the rear brakes with new cylinders, as well as the rectification of an oil leak and paintwork to the rear quarter to improve upon a previous repair.

The vendor states that annual oil and filter services have been undertaken by him throughout his 15-year ownership. In April 2017, the distributor was rebuilt, with a replacement inlet gasket, injectors, and flexible brake lines, fitted by Peugeot specialist 3D Motorsport.

At 124,741 miles, the engine was rebuilt and a replacement cambelt fitted. The rear beam axle was also rebuilt and all four shock absorbers were replaced with Peugeot OEM parts.

The most recent MOT test was on 25 August 2020 at 137,611 miles. This resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The matching Pirelli Cinturato P1 tyres all round are in very good condition, with ample tread remaining.

Now looking for its next enthusiast owner, this 205 GTI will be supplied with over 15 years’ worth of receipts and historic MOT test certificates to back up its service history. Several spare parts including a set of plastic body trims and an exhaust manifold will be supplied, as well as various magazine articles on the model.
