1992 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.9

This 1992 Peugeot 205 GTI is in smart, highly original condition and is a well-cared for example of the classic hot hatch. It features the more powerful four-cylinder 1.9-litre motor, which drives the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The true mileage is approximately 284,000 km, though a refurbished instrument panel is now installed showing a lower reading.

The car was delivered in July 1992 and has gone on to have just three owners, all of whom have cared for it and kept detailed documentation. Its original owner took delivery of the car in Victoria and held onto the car for 20 years until approximately 260,000 km, with records suggesting it may have been in storage from 2008 to 2012. The current owner purchased it in 2015.

The GTI’s body appears to be free of rust, with minor imperfections such as small dents on the passenger side rear quarter. Its owner also notes a flaw on the front bumper and small ripples in the front wings that suggest that it may have had repairs to the front section at some point in its history. However, the cross section on the underside of the bonnet looks original and undamaged.

Its paintwork is in very good condition for the age and mileage of the car, and is believed to be largely original. The owner believes that the bonnet may have been repainted in the past, and likewise the wings given their imperfections. There is surface wear including some stone chips on the front bumper, lower sills and door openings, and minor scuffs on the front passenger side corner and passenger side rear bumper. A 5cm scratch is also visible on the tailgate.

Inside, the Peugeot is in wonderfully original condition. The original green ‘quintet’ fabric is in good order overall, with only modest wear and tear on the driver’s seat. The owner suspects that the front seat bolsters may have been re-trimmed as this is a common area of degradation, and they show only minimal wear given the mileage. There is a small crack around the HVAC control knobs, and a misaligned piece of trim higher up. The electrics work correctly, including central locking and power windows, and even the original Eurovox tape deck. While the air-conditioning does function, it can struggle in the height of the Australian summer.

The car developed a fault in the instrument panel during its last ownership that could not be repaired. A refurbished unit was therefore sourced from a donor GTI and installed, with the original instruments retained and included with the car as shown. The replacement unit was installed when it read approximately 110,000 km, and therefore the car has covered only around 5,000 km since then. With the original instruments showing 279,511 km, the total mileage from new is therefore circa 284,500 km.

Owned and enjoyed by passionate drivers, the Peugeot has been well-maintained and thoroughly documented throughout its life. It was last serviced in April 2021 by Hahn Automotive. Work completed included an oil and filter change, new air filter and general maintenance. A new battery was installed in March 2021.

During the last service, a split was discovered in the intake pipe between the air filter and airflow meter. A temporary fix has been carried out and a new part is on the way from the UK and will either be installed or supplied to the winning bidder separately if delayed.

The car passed its New South Wales roadworthy check in January 2021 with no warnings or advisories. Its tyres are in fair condition and estimated at 50% wear. A good service history will be provided with the car, along with all of its original books and the original jack and tools.

Boasting a lifetime of enjoyment and contentious care, this Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 is clearly a well-loved machine and is in highly original order. It represents a great opportunity to relish a legendary hot hatch driving experience, and take ownership of a cherished example.
