1992 MERCEDES-BENZ (W124) 500E

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is an excellent and well-maintained example of the imposing W124 generation ‘super saloon’. Powered by a sonorous 322bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine driving the rear wheels though an automatic transmission, this example shows 97,600km on the odometer.

First registered in September 1992, this 500E was imported to the UK last year and was re-registered with the DVLA in April 2020. During their year of ownership, the vendor has systematically worked their way through the vehicle, addressing issues as they appear, as well as carrying out preventative maintenance to the tune of £4,803. In this time, they have also used the car as their daily driver around London, turning plenty of heads thanks to its V8 burble and rare factory colour.

The Bornite paintwork had been resprayed prior to the vendor’s ownership, but presents very well overall. There are some minor marks near the fuel cap and on the lower passenger door trim, though the latter is not too obvious. There is also a small chip in the boot lid, and a few minor stone chip marks to the front end. The standard alloys have been replaced with later wheels, which are in near-pristine condition.

Inside, the cabin of this W124 is in very good condition, wearing its age with pride. The deep bolsters on the front seats offer impressive support while driving, and there is just some modest wear to the driver’s seat outer bolster, as well as on the armrest on the door card. The wood trims retain a glossy shine, and add a touch of sophisticated to the interior. There are no known electrical faults.

The most recent service took place during March 2021, and was performed by Star-Tec Mercedes. This work included a standard oil and filter change along with the fitting of a new lambda sensor. The vehicle was also serviced in December 2020 by Star-Tec, which included the fitment of a replacement fan and head gasket alongside routine maintenance.

During the vendor’s ownership, there have been several big-ticket items of expenditure. Highlights include a full transmission rebuild (£1,554) new Fox cat-back exhaust (£675) high-performance catalytic converters (£1,000) new injectors, HT leads, rotors and a new air mass sensor (£751) among other consumable items and service parts. A comprehensive spreadsheet detailing the last year of expenditure in fastidious detail is provided with the car, though there is no prior service history or handbooks.

The most recent MOT test took place on 25 March 2021, and resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. It initially failed due to emissions being outside the specified tolerance threshold, but both catalytic converters and lambda sensors were subsequently replaced. All four tyres have plenty of tread remaining.

Having used the vehicle daily for the last year in London, the vendor has shown just how usable these high-performance W124 saloons remain in modern driving conditions.
