1991 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (MK2) GTI 8V - 45,000 MILES

This Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 is a very well-presented example of the archetypal ‘90s hot hatch, presented with genuine low mileage and comprehensive maintenance history. Under the bonnet sits an eight-valve 1.8-litre inline-four producing 110bhp, driven through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 45,011 miles from new.

First registered in August 1991, this Golf GTI has been in the seller’s possession for one month, and has just three previous keepers on the V5C log book.

The bodywork of this three-door Mk2 GTI is reported to be in very good condition. The ceramic-coated Tornado Red paintwork presents superbly, with the vendor noting that the offside rear quarter has previously been resprayed, and that there are small stone chips to the nearside rear quarter. A few minor dents are present, each reportedly measuring no more than 5mm wide. The car rides on the original 15-inch BBS alloy wheels, which are in good order. The only noted modification to the car is the fitment of more reliable Mk3 Golf brake callipers at the rear, while the front items are standard Mk2 callipers.

Moving inside, the Charcoal Grey and Red fabric upholstery remains in good condition and is believed to be entirely original. The vendor has reported the door shut trims appear with some minor scuffing from entering and exiting the vehicle, though the door cards and floor mats present well. The plastic dashboard trim appears with minimal surface scratches or scuffs, while the driver controls and switches all work as they should. It remains highly original, down to the period Blaupunkt radio cassette player, and the iconic ‘golf ball’ gear knob. The only additions are a Parrot hands-free phone system, a Thatcham Approved Alarm system, and remote central locking.

The last service was undertaken in February 2020 at 44,819, where technicians at Kwik-Fit changed the engine oil and filter. Previous recent services were in November 2018 at 44,708 miles, and in November 2017 at 44,612 miles – the latter being at a Volkswagen main dealer that included renewal of the brake fluid. The history shows the cambelt was last replaced in 2008.

The most recent MOT test was on 22 October 2020 at 44,956 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres in fitment 155/50/R15 all round, which were fitted in 2003. The front tyres are reported to have 4mm of tread remaining, while the rears have around 6mm.

Accompanying the vehicle are the owner’s manual and stamped service book in their factory holder, along with various service invoices and MOT certificates. There are also four GTI steel wheels that come with the car, which the next owner could use for winter tyres or simply as a spare set.

This Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 is a superb example of the ‘everyman’ performance icon, presented with an extensive service history as shown below. The vendor understands that this Golf has only ever been taken out in dry conditions, otherwise being kept in secure and dry garaging, which accounts for its remarkable appearance today. It is an eminently usable as a daily driver, but would also make a fine addition to any collection of modern classics.
