1991 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (MK2) GTI 8V - 23,263 MILES

This VW Golf GTI Mk2 8v is a stunning time-warp example of a hot hatch hero, presented in superb condition with very low mileage. Under the bonnet is the 110bhp eight-valve 1.8-litre inline-four engine, driven through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows just 23,263 miles from new.

First registered in August 1991, there are three previous registered keepers on the log book. It is understood that the fourth owner acquired the car in October 2018, and the present fifth owner acquired it only very recently - but has yet to assign the V5C into their name.

As the detailed set of photos in the gallery below shows, the three-door bodywork of this GTI is in excellent condition, with flush shut lines and crisp panel gaps all around the body. Bidders are encouraged to review the images in full, as they provide a great illustration of the car’s remarkably well-preserved appearance.

The Tornado Red paint finish presents superbly, with only a few very minor imperfections. Likewise, the black plastic trims around the bumpers and wheel arches are also in great shape, with no cracks or other damage. The badging has some age-related patina, but as is evident from the photos this car presents in remarkably good unrestored condition. It rides on the 15-inch BBS alloy wheels, which have only tiny paint chips and some blistering around the rims.

Turning to the interior, the grey and colour-striped cloth upholstery appears to be as good as new, with absolutely no damage to the fabric and virtually no wear. The trim around the dashboard and door cards is in equally impressive condition, with no cracks or scratches in the plastics, and with no missing elements. Ahead of the driver is the original steering wheel, while the ‘golf ball’ dimpled gear knob is also still present. The Panasonic radio cassette head unit is also believed to be the factory-fit item. The car is equipped with a sunroof, which is in perfect working order, and there are no faults with any of the switchgear or instrument gauges.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out in June 2018 at 22,850 miles at the Discount VW Audi Centre in Wirral. This consisted of an engine oil and filter service, with a new air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, and replacement of the cambelt and tensioner.

The most recent MOT was on 17 October 2019 at 22,998 miles, when it achieved a pass with no advisories. Two months earlier, a number of items were flagged as needing replacement, including brake pipes and ferrules, suspension bushes, and CV joint rubber boots - and all of these were evidently attended to given the clean pass in October.

The wheels are shod in a set of Goodyear Eagle NCT tyres in size 195/50 R15 all round. They are date-coded to 2001, but remain in very good condition with ample tread.

Accompanying the car are all of the original books, shown in the photo gallery, including the stamped service record detailing the early history in the early 1990s. Two keys and Scorpion remote fobs are also present.

This VW Golf GTI Mk2 is a striking example of a popular modern classic, presented in superb order and with remarkably low mileage. It is becoming hard to find original and unmodified examples of the Mk2 in good condition, and one with less than 24,000 miles from new is extremely rare. This is an eminently usable and reliable modern classic, which would make a fine addition to any collection.
