1991 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (MK2) GLX

This Volkswagen Golf GLX is a well-presented example of a modern classic. Under the bonnet is a 1.8-litre petrol engine producing up to 89bhp and 104lb-ft of torque, driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer reads 137,942 km (85,713 miles).

Originally delivered to France, this EU-market model was supplied to its first owner by CP Italia of Paris on 11 October 1991. It was imported to the UK around 15 years ago, and has been with only one registered keeper since then, and is now offered for sale by the trade.

Finished in Navy Blue metallic, the Golf’s paintwork holds up well for a 30-year-old vehicle, and has an impressive shine across the panels. The vendor believes the finish to be original to the car, with a handful of age-related marks betraying its past life as an urban commuter. The plastic front bumper is scuffed, while the nearside front wing has stone chips and a small dent. There are also two scratches visible on the sliding sunroof, while the plastic door rub strips are discoloured. Some scuffs near the front passenger door handle have also been touched in. Riding on BBS style wheels similar to those found on the Mk2 Golf GTI, these are in good order with only minor kerbing marks.

Inside, the Golf’s grey velour upholstery remains in attractive condition, with no rips present in the fabric. All four door cards show signs of wear commensurate with the car’s age, with the steering wheel and gear knob showing some patina. As a GLX model, this example boasts the aforementioned sunroof, as well as electric windows all round. The vendor asserts that everything remains in working order, with no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.

The most recent service was carried out on 15 March 2021 by M&J VW Specialists of Gloucester at 130,000 km (80,778 miles). All engine fluids were replaced and a new clutch cable was fitted as part of a recommissioning process. Prior to this, a service was carried out in April 2020, while in 2015 the timing belt and water pump were replaced. During the vendor’s ownership, only regular maintenance has been needed outside of the service schedule, including adjustment of the carburettor.

The most recent MOT test was on 2 December 2020 at 137,911 km (85,693 miles). This was a first-time pass, with advisories for the offside rear wheel bearing and offside front suspension strut pin, which the vendor advises has since been rectified. Shod in a matching set of Pirelli Cinturato tyres, these have 7mm of tread remaining and present in good condition.

This VW Golf (Mk2) 1.8 GLX harks back to a simpler era of motoring and presents well with its modest but stylish specification. With relatively low mileage to date, it would make a smart and reliable ‘everyman’ modern classic, or could be a great basis for its next owner to lightly restore or modify.
