1991 RENAULT 5 GT TURBO

This 1992 Renault 5 GT Turbo is a smart example of the marque’s classic hot hatch, which has recently been treated to a full repaint and re-trim after a short period off the road. Under the bonnet sits a turbocharged 1.4-litre inline-four cylinder engine, which sends 118bhp to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer currently indicates 101,014 miles from new.

This Renault 5 GT Turbo was first registered on 17 April 1991 and there are six previous registered keepers. It has been in the vendor’s possession for one year. Being a Phase II example of the model, the car features a water-cooled turbocharger and a new ignition system, giving the facelifted 5 GT Turbo a redline 500rpm higher than the Phase I, and slightly more power to deploy to the front wheels.

The car appears to have been off the road for around six years, but has recently been subject to a cosmetic restoration and a fresh service. Online records show annual MOT tests between 2007 and 2013. The car never failed a test during this period, during which it covered some 30,000 miles on the road. It is now offered for sale by the trade.

This example’s Tungsten Grey finish now presents in excellent condition, with just a few very minor stone chips. The only reported damage other than this is a small dent in the bonnet, which is only noticeable under close inspection, and all the other panels present well. As shown in the images, the underside of the vehicle remains in good condition, with no evidence of rust, having had corrosion removed from both sills during the refurbishment. The vehicle rides on the original 13-inch five-spoke Speedline alloy wheels, which are in great shape with no scratches or kerb damage.

Moving inside, the grey and red fabric upholstery looks superb following the re-trim, and retains a wonderful retro appearance. The floor mats, door cards and seat bolsters all present in excellent condition, as do the driver controls and dashboard switches. The cabin features electric windows and the stereo has been updated to a more contemporary head unit. The vendor notes that everything still works as it should, with no electrical gremlins to report.

The last service was undertaken in September 2020 at 104,001 miles, where the technicians at the car’s owner, J. A. Sports Cars in Wisbech, changed the engine oil, filters, coolant and brake fluid, before fitting new rear brake callipers and pads. Prior to this, there is a gap in the service history, with the last stamp in the service book occurring in 1998 at 43,000 miles, while the MOT history documents the mileage from 67,006 to 101,857 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 13 September 2013 at 101,857 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. This test has of course expired, but the vendor notes the vehicle will be handed over with a fresh 12-month certificate. The vehicle’s 13-inch wheels are wrapped in Avon Turbospeed CR27 195/55/R13 tyres, which the owner reports are brand new.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s handbook and service book in their original Renault 5 wallet, as well as a few invoices.

This Renault 5 GT Turbo represents a rare opportunity to own an exciting modern classic, presented with a refreshed finish, re-trimmed interior and a spritely rev-happy engine. Far from being a low-mileage trailer queen, this GT Turbo was used and enjoyed as intended until around six years ago. It has since received some cosmetic attention to ensure that it is ready for many more miles, and would now make a fine addition to any collection of hot hatches.
