1991 PORSCHE 928 S4

This Porsche 928 S4 is a wonderful modern classic, packed with period character, and finished in a rare factory colour scheme. Its engine is the 320hp 5.0-litre M28/41 engine, which is coupled to the four-speed automatic transmission - perfectly suited to its continent-crossing capabilities. This is a relatively low mileage example, with just 77,477 miles from new.

As well as a larger and more powerful V8 engine, the 928 S4 was also equipped with uprated Brembo front discs, four-piston calipers and the multi-link 'Weissach' rear axle. Fitted with the automatic transmission, as the vast majority of 928s were, this S4 is a consummate grand tourer that combines legendary Porsche engineering with comfort and practicality.

This particular 928 is a 1991 model year car, but was not first registered until February 1993, which suggests it may have been a special order dealer demonstrator. It was specified in the vibrant hue of Cobalt Blue, with a two-tone interior of Light Grey and Cobalt Blue leather. Factory options included dark blue piping, a sunroof panel, lumbar support for the driver’s seat, and a high-grade Blaupunkt stereo.

It was supplied by AFN Porsche in Guildford, and since its first registration in February 1993, there have been just six previous owners, which are each fully documented in the extensive history file. This 928 was also featured in the July 2014 issue of Classic Cars magazine in its ‘Gone in 6 Seconds’ cover story.

The bodywork is in superb condition, with impressive shut lines and panel gaps all around the car. There is no evidence of any damage or corrosion, and all of the trim pieces are present and correct. Its Cobalt Blue finish is smooth and glossy, and the door jambs, bonnet and tailgate shuts are all in very good order. The door rubbers and window seals are in great shape, as are the satin black front lip spoiler and rear wing. It rides on the correct 16-inch forged alloy wheels, which present very well, showing only minor lacquer blemishes around the Porsche crest centre caps.

In the cabin, the Light Grey and Cobalt Blue leather trim is in great condition, with only light wear to the piped edges of the seats, and no rips or tears in any of the upholstery. There is very modest wear visible on the seat cushions and bolsters, presenting as a smart patina to the finish. The interior is equipped with electrically adjustable seats, automatic air-conditioning, electric windows, and a power operated sunroof, which all work as they should. Its factory-fitted options included a premium Blaupunkt Symphony audio system, which remains installed - though the LCD display appears to have a few non-working cells.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out on 14 January 2020 at 77,168 miles by Porsche specialist Cridfords in Surrey. This comprised a standard engine oil service and inspection. The notes from the work suggest that the fuel system would benefit from an inspection to ensure the lines and gaskets are all in good order.

In November 2013 at 74,934 miles, the car was given a major service by marque specialist No.5 Garage in London. The camshaft timing belt, tensioners, and water pump were all replaced, and it was given fresh coolant and brake fluid. Based on age rather than mileage, the cam belt should be renewed again at the next service.

The most recent MOT test was carried out on 13 December 2019 at 77,157 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories whatsoever. The alloys are shod in a set of Toyo Proxes T1-R tyres, which are in excellent condition.

Peter Morgan’s buyers’ guide for the 928 calls the grand tourer “a sure-footed, confident machine with a gorgeous soundtrack”, adding that its “surprisingly sharp performance is matched with a sumptuous feel of majestic progress along the road”.

This Porsche 928 S4 is a superb grand tourer with a wonderful V8 soundtrack. It boasts genuine low mileage, and also comes with a complete record of every previous owner from new - something that is becoming increasingly rare to find with classic and collector cars. Whether used regularly as a fun weekend car, or less frequently on longer road trips, this stunning Porsche is sure to impress its next owner.
