This Porsche 964 Carrera RS is an iconic modern classic, presented in superb condition throughout, and with very low mileage. Under the engine lid is the numbers-matching 260bhp 3.6-litre air-cooled ‘M64/03’ flat-six with a lightweight flywheel, coupled to a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission, driving the rear wheels via an asymmetrical limited-slip differential. The odometer indicates 53,223 km (33,071 miles).

The Carrera RS tipped the scales at just 1,220kg, which was achieved in part by swapping the steel doors and bonnet for aluminium items, replacing the electric window motors with hand-winding mechanisms, fitting thinner glass, and removing sound deadening material. Further weight loss was realised through removing the air-conditioning, power steering, and radio, as well as fitting the car with lightweight 17-inch magnesium alloy ‘Cup’ wheels that were specifically designed for the RS. This is one of only 2,282 examples built.

An early 1992 model year car - the first year of production of the RS - this 964 was first registered in November 1991, supplied to its first owner in Padova, Italy. It is understood to have had just one other owner in Italy - located in Bologna - before being exported to the UK where it was re-registered in September 2013. It remained in a significant private collection for nearly seven years, until it was purchased by the current and fourth owner last year.

Today, this 964 Carrera RS presents in stunning condition, with smooth and straight body panels, even joint gaps, and flush shut lines. It has previously been completely resprayed in its original and rare Polar Silver hue, and within the last year it has been treated to a further comprehensive detailing session. The front end of the car was then given a coat of spray-on transparent paint protection film, guarding it against minor road debris.

All of the other exterior features are in very good order. There is a small paint chip on the passenger-side door handle, and some very slight wear to the window frames in a few places, but all of the rubber seals and gaskets are in great shape. Its light lenses are also in excellent condition, with the rear reflector free of chips or cracks. During a recent cosmetic refresh while in the current ownership, the wheels and wheel arch liners were all removed, so that the arches could be thoroughly cleaned and detailed. It rides on the correct set of 17-inch magnesium alloys, which have just been refurbished and now look pristine.

Inside, this 911 retains the RS-specific lightweight bucket seats with black and three-tone grey leather upholstery. There are signs of use on the leather, but no heavy wear, and the seats and steering wheel have recently been given a reconditioning treatment to further enhance the appearance and longevity.

Its carpets are reported to be original and in great shape, date-coded with October 1991 stickers. There is red ‘Carrera RS’ embroidery in the rear carpeted section, plus red seat belts, and of course red fabric door pulls. While some examples have had creature comforts retrofitted, this RS still has no air-conditioning and no stereo. There are no known electrical issues, and all of the switchgear works as it should.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out in December 2020 at approximately 53,000 km by Carrera Sport in Haywards Heath. This comprised a general check-over and a full service. During the vendor’s brief tenure, the car has also had a mechanical refresh, with a rebuild of the brake callipers, and a complete strip and clean of the suspension. New brake pads were installed, a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres were fitted, and the car was given a full geometry setup.

The most recent MOT test was on 2 July 2020 at 53,117 km, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories or defects noted. While there are still a few months left on the current test cover, the vendor has said that they will hand the car over with a fresh 12-month certificate.

Accompanying the car is the driver’s manual, service directory, a stamped maintenance record, immobiliser handbook, and other Porsche literature. Some original Italian registration documents are also present. The car has two keys, spare key tag from the factory, original tools, and the spare wheel, jack, and air compressor.

This Porsche 964 Carrera RS is a much-celebrated version of an already desirable air-cooled 911. With enhancements derived from the marque’s Carrera Cup racing cars of the era, this is an exciting analogue performance car that is equally at home on the road or track, and is quite simply one of the most rewarding Porsches ever built. Given its low mileage and impressive overall condition, this would be a credit to any discerning collection, and is ultimately ready to drive and enjoy straight away.
