This Mercedes-Benz (W124) 300CE is a true modern classic, with an elegant pillarless coupe design, presenting in excellent condition throughout. Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre (M104), 24-valve, straight-six producing 220bhp and driving the rear wheels through the optional five-speed automatic transmission. One of 330 300CEs with the M104.980 engine to be delivered to Australia, this example has covered a mere 93,000kms.

A stylish coupe version of the well-regarded W124 E-Class range, with a lower roofline and more steeply raked windscreen; the 300CE is a sophisticated tourer. Being a 1991 model this vehicle benefits from the desirable facelift and the later, more engaging engine, with its power delivery pairing well with the superb build quality and plush interior.

The exterior of the vehicle presents in very good order with all the trademarks of an original vehicle. The Midnight Blue paintwork shows off the 300CE's understated good looks. The owner reports two scratches on the passenger-side ‘Sacco’ panels, some stone chips around the lower valance, and a small crack in the driver's side headlight. These are described as slight imperfections that could be seen to by a professional detailer. The brightwork presents well, and all the glass is original Mercedes-Benz equipment.

The cabin is trimmed in high-quality blue leather, while walnut inlays on the door cards, dashboard and centre console provide an attractive accent. Its leather upholstery has recently been detailed, and while there are minor cracks in the wood veneers, overall the interior is in very good shape. The very well-appointed interior features conveniences like cruise control, electric memory seats, a Kenwood stereo and an electric tilt/slide sunroof.

Powering the 300CE is the 24-valve, 3.0-litre, straight-six that sits in a well-presented engine bay. The last maintenance was performed in April 2021, with a full service including an oil change, coolant flush, brake fluid flush, new air filter, new battery and an air leak repair. Prior to this, additional work was performed in December 2020 with new ignition coils and a new genuine Mercedes-Benz ignition control module fitted, as well as the fitment of two new Bosch fuel pumps. A total of $6,400 has been invested in the vehicle over the last 6 months.

A safety inspection was carried out on the vehicle in April 2021 also, with the pink slip certificate provided in the sale. The car is currently registered under the NSW Historic Registration scheme, and will therefore be sold unregistered. The mechanic has recommend the replacement of the air-conditioning compressor, and further diagnosis on an intermittently functional passenger window and driver’s side seat belt arm.

The vehicle rides on quality Continental tyres that retain healthy tread depth. Included in the sale are the original warning triangle, spare tyre, and jack, as well as a file of documents, including sales brochures, a summary of the car’s ownership and sale history, as well as the recent service receipts. The original service book was unfortunately misplaced by the previous owner.

This Mercedes-Benz 300CE-24 is an elegant modern classic that is presented in excellent order inside and out. Following its original owner, a Melbourne doctor who retained the car until 2012 (67,000kms), the 300CE headed to Queensland, where a Mercedes-Benz Club member lovingly maintained the car until 2018 (84,000kms). It’s since resided in Sydney, and been used sparingly over the last three years. This low-mileage coupe would make an exceptional long-distance tourer or prove to be a very stylish daily driver.
