1991 MERCEDES-BENZ 250 GD WOLF

This Mercedes-Benz 250 GD Wolf is an iconic rugged 4x4, ready for off-road expeditions or simply as a fun summer cruiser. It is powered by a 2.5-litre five-cylinder diesel, producing around 93bhp, driving all four wheels through a manual transmission with one dedicated low-range gear and four additional forward speeds, plus differential locks. The odometer indicates 35,696 km, though this is not warranted.

Presented in military-grade ‘Wolf’ specification, this 250 GD is understood to have been completed at the factory in January 1991, and subsequently put into service on the continent. It was imported to the UK and re-registered on 1 September 2020, and later that month changed hands to another keeper. It is now offered for sale by the trade.

It left the factory finished in ‘Dull Matt Bronze Green’, though it is not known whether the current finish is original, or whether it has been resprayed in the past to smarten up its appearance. It is described as being in fair condition today, certainly presentable enough to use as a fun weekend toy, but not so impressive that you would be worried about the odd chip or scuff. The G-Wagen is equipped with a snorkel to increase its give it added wading capability, and there is a strap-down tarpaulin-style soft top hood with clear plastic rear and side windows. It rides on 16-inch heavy duty steel wheels with a satin black finish.

Inside, the cabin trim is most likely entirely original. There is dark green vinyl upholstery, which remains in generally good order, with minor damage to the driver’s seat as shown in the gallery. As the truck has seen military use, there are numerous marks and chips around the plastic and paint of the door panels and rear loading bay area - but no significant damage.

It was reportedly last serviced by ex-military vehicle specialist L Jackson & Co in Doncaster, just before the handover to the last private owner. However, there is no paperwork for this oil service, and no prior service history, which is typically the case with any vehicle formerly used by the armed forces.

The vendor will also have a fresh MOT certificate put on the car before handover. The most recent MOT test currently on file was on 30 July 2020 at 34,819 km - shortly before it was re-registered in the UK - which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. All four wheels are shod in Continental LM90 off-road tyres, which are date-coded to 2008 and still have a good level of tread remaining.

This Mercedes-Benz 250 GD ‘Wolf’ is a sound example of a famously reliable and robust military-grade vehicle, which would make a great no-frills 4x4 for utility purposes or for fun top-down road trips in the warmer months. The ‘Geländewagen’ is a highly capable off-roader with a design that has stood the test of time, and this one would make a great addition to any garage.
