1991 MAZDA MX-5 BBR TURBO

KEY FACTS

• A cherished example of the exceedingly rare turbo-converted MX-5, presented in very good order.
• Under the bonnet sits a 1.6-litre inline-four engine, which has been fettled and turbocharged by BBR, boosting the power output to 152bhp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission.
• Particularly noteworthy is the colour, which was an upgrade over the usual red, black or white, and the fact that the standard differential was retained.
• BBR built up such a good reputation with their conversion kits that Mazda endorsed it with their own three-year / 60,000 mile warranty.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• Alongside the BBR kit which includes a Garrett T25 turbocharger, new exhaust manifold and air-to-air intercooler, this MX-5 also features a Cobalt stainless-steel cat-back exhaust, KYB AGX eight-way adjustable dampers, Autolink springs, and a period-correct stereo.
• The factory-fitted leather seats were an optional extra, and the OE specification VLS differential remains in place, along with the original Momo steering wheel.

CONDITION

• There is no damage to the bodywork.
• The car was fully resprayed in the correct Silverstone Silver around six years ago, and the paintwork remains in very good condition with only light wear, including some minor marks to the front and rear bumpers.
• The Mohair roof with heated rear window is very presentable, with no signs of damage to the material or to the rear screen.
• All four wheels have been refurbished and are in near-pristine condition.
• Inside, the cabin remains in great condition and presents wonderfully. There is some wear and creasing noted to the seats, along with signs of use on high-traffic areas such as the gearstick, steering wheel, centre console and door cards.
• There are no known faults with the vehicle.
• The most recent MOT test took place on 24 June 2021, resulting in a clean pass with no advisories, after initially failing on 17 June with a leaking rear brake pipe, which was fixed before the re-test.

SERVICE HISTORY

• The latest service was carried out during May 2020 at 108,789 miles, and consisted of a standard oil and filter change.
• Prior to this, a major service - including differential oil change - was carried out in July 2016, and an interim service in October 2017.
• The cam belt was last changed in July 2013.
• Outside of servicing, the inner and outer sills have been repaired and a rust treatment has been carried out, and the vendor has replaced the cooling fan switch.
• The vendor notes that the car has been tuned by Skuzzle Motorsport, and has improved Ray-Briggs headlights fitted in place of the originals.

SUMMARY

Offering classic Mazda MX-5 dynamics and character with significantly upgraded performance, this BBR Turbo-converted model is one of only 850 built, and believed to be one of only around 130 remaining.
