1991 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 200 TDI CONVERTIBLE

This 1991 Land Rover Defender 90 Convertible is a robust utility vehicle, presented in excellent condition throughout following a recent and comprehensive ground-up restoration. Under the bonnet sits the 2.5-litre 200TDI turbodiesel inline-four engine, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 71,619 miles from new, which is well documented by the accompanying service history.

First registered in February 1991, this Defender is understood to have six previous keepers, and has been with its current owner for the last year.

The bodywork remains in good order, with flush shut lines and smooth panels, and has been fully resprayed in its original colour of Marine Blue, with the finish now presenting in excellent condition. The car was given aftermarket Series Land Rover doors with removable top sections during the restoration work, as well as a fold-down safari-style windscreen, a Heritage grille, new door pillars, and new bumpers – to give it an on-trend ‘backdated’ aesthetic.

There are also Optimill billet aluminium bonnet hinges and a billet fuel filler cap, as well as body-coloured chequer steel plates. The car features Union Jack emblems on the wings, as well as black mud flaps, LED headlights and 16-inch Marine Blue Wolf wheels, all of which appear in excellent order. The beige Exmoor Trim canvas roof remains in superb condition, with no rips or tears, and it fits well on the frame.

Moving inside, the seats are trimmed with smart Tobacco leather, which features black side panels and cream piping. The seats appear in as-new condition with no wear to speak of, while the inner body panels have also been refreshed in Marine Blue. The cabin features a wooden-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, also benefitting from the fitment of a heated windscreen and billet aluminium interior trim. Everything is reported to work as it should, with no electrical issues, and there are no warning lights present on the dashboard.

During the ground-up rebuild, the Defender received a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, including new shock absorbers, springs, rear bump stops, and a new exhaust. Front and rear brake discs, callipers and pads were all replaced, as well as the brake master cylinder. CV joints were also renewed, along with rear ball joints, lower swivel pins, hub bearings, and a swivel kit. A new water pump was fitted, and the engine received a new timing belt, power steering belt and fan belt, and a new timing cover gasket, oil seal, differential gaskets. The chassis was also sandblasted and treated both inside and out.

The last service was undertaken in June 2020 at 71,286 miles, where technicians at Knowl Hill Land Rover replaced all of the car’s fluids and filters, before performing a thorough detail. This was a post-restoration check-up, to ensure that everything was in good order. Prior to this, the Defender has an excellent service history record, as summarised below.

The most recent MOT test was on 5 August 2020 at 71,286 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The wheels come wrapped with General Grabber AT tyres, which present in excellent condition on all four corners.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original handbooks, warranty book and stamped service book, as well as multiple MOT certificates and the recent invoice from Knowl Hill Land Rover.

This Land Rover Defender 90 is a superb example of the all-terrain icon, which benefits from some tasteful cosmetic modifications and a comprehensive mechanical overhaul as part of a recent thorough restoration.
