1991 BMW (E34) M5 - 40,681 KM

KEY FACTS

  • This BMW E34 M5 is part of the ‘Automobili Eleganti Collection’, offered on Collecting Cars alongside a very rare and well-preserved Mercedes-Benz E 500.
  • An unmodified, very low-kms E34 M5, with just three keepers from new – the first being the BMW dealership Elauto SpA in Palermo, Italy – and which has been exceptionally well preserved – cars are only this original once.
  • Under the bonnet is the 3.5-litre ‘S38 B36’ straight-six – a true road-legal race engine – producing 315 HP (DIN), coupled with a five-speed manual transmission.
  • It benefits from a comprehensive service history and remains remarkably original.
  • A BMW Classic Certificate was issued on 28/03/2019 and is with the car.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

  • Its handsome bodywork, designed by Ercole Spada, is finished in Diamantschwarz Metallic paintwork over a full black leather interior with black carpeting and black velour floor mats – option code S423A.
  • The factory specification includes Shadow Line trim, power windows, power front seats with driver memory settings, heated front and rear seats, cruise control, electrically adjustable headrests at the rear, electrically operated rear window blind, automatic climate control, Blaupunkt München RD 104 CD radio, HI-FI system with 10 amplified speakers, interior and outside mirrors with auto-dip, and a sunroof.
  • The car features the illuminated gear shifter, which remains in perfect working order.
  • It rides on the correct 17-inch M-System I three-piece alloy wheels.
  • As further evidence of its incredible originality, the original ‘ELAUTO’ dealership window sticker and registration plate frame are still fitted to the car.
  • The original owner’s manuals, service book, toolkit and spare wheel are included, along with all five original keys.

CONDITION

  • No bodywork damage to any panels.
  • Its Diamantschwarz Metallic paintwork is in excellent condition, with the vendor noting that only a small section of the driver door and right rear wing have been repainted. The paintwork is described as being ‘98%’ of the original factory finish, and has a very impressive appearance.
  • The original black leather upholstery is in excellent condition, commensurate with the remarkably low mileage, and shows a magnificent patina.
  • The vendor indicates that the leather passenger door card trim appears to have shrunk very slightly. This can be fixed very easily and rapidly but his upholsterer is not available before September. A few light marks can be seen on the side of the centre console, where an aftermarket telephone holder has previously been attached.
  • The original headliner is slightly sagging in some small areas. As this is very minor, the vendor decided not to change the headliner, as the original part is no longer supplied by BMW, and the aftermarket materials are very different from the original. The vendor preferred to preserve the originality of the car.
  • There are no known electrical faults, and all of the switchgear works as it should.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The brakes fluid was changed in May 2021 at 40,488 kms by official BMW workshop Sanremo Motors Srl in Italy, with an invoice on file. Likewise, paperwork is also present for a new battery fitted in February 2021 by the BMW dealer in Mougins, France.
  • Its last scheduled service was in May 2019 at 36,612 km, where BMW Classic technicians carried out a marque Inspection 2, along with a full bodywork check. This major service included resealing of the DOHC cam cover, the gearbox, and the oil carrier, as well as adjustment of the valve clearances. The clutch slave cylinder was renewed, along with the differential radial sealing ring and output flange, and the cooling system was cleaned out. The engine’s six throttle bodies were cleaned and fitted with a new hose, and the driveshaft coupling was renewed.
  • The May 2019 service also comprised replacement of the power window controls at the rear, the headrest controls at the rear, and a new BMW battery. The electric cables under the rear seat were reorganised, and the air-conditioning system was fully serviced and refilled with R134a refrigerant. Its power steering system was serviced, filled with new oil, and the self-levelling suspension was overhauled with new rear gas springs. New brake lines were fitted front and rear, and the brake fluid was renewed. New exhaust tailpipe tips were also installed.
  • Finally, BMW Classic also gave the car a full routine service, with new engine oil and oil filter; new air filter, fuel filter and microfilter; fresh spark plugs and inspection of the belts. The coolant and gearbox oil were renewed, and the engine was tuned.
  • Other work carried out during 2019 included replacement of the air-conditioning dehumidifier, new dust covers for the shock absorbers at the rear, repairs to the front and rear headrest adjustment mechanism, and balancing of the wheels.
  • More than €11,000 was invested during the course of 2019 in maintenance and improvements at BMW Classic, with all invoices on file.
  • New Pirelli P Zero Nero GT 235/45 ZR17 tyres were fitted in March 2019 and have only travelled around 5,000 kms, sot hey remain in great shape.

SUMMARY

This BMW (E34) M5 is a collector-quality example of an exciting modern classic, with incredibly low mileage and a comprehensive marque main dealer service history. It remains entirely unmodified and wonderfully original, and would make a superb addition to any assembly of performance cars or BMW icons in particular.

The BMW M5 E34 was the last hand-assembled M series car and the last M5 to feature a race-inspired engine. In this respect, it is the last true BMW Motorsport product, before the cars were designed for significantly larger audiences. Concluding the magazine’s review of the new car in 1991, Car & Driver’s tester stated that the then-new E34 M5 "just might be the best car in the world."
