This Volkswagen Golf Mk2 Driver is a well-presented example of a popular modern classic, with very low indicated mileage. With its GTI-style twin headlamp arrangement as well as a sunroof, it is fitted with a 1.6-litre inline-four, coupled to an automatic transmission. The odometer shows 33,183 miles.

First registered on 16 August 1990, there are three previous keepers on the log book. There is early service history up to the mid-1990s, as well as MOT records from 2006 onwards that help to corroborate the low mileage. It was acquired by the vendor in October 2020.

The Tornado Red paintwork presents well, with the vendor noting a small dent on the nearside corner of the front valance as well as few other minor dents across the bodywork measuring no more than 5mm in diameter. Lots of Mk2 Golfs suffer with obvious panel rust around the lower sections, but this example looks remarkably clean, with a glossy finish to its paint and with no heavy fading to any of the plastic or rubber trims. The steel wheels are in generally good order, though with some kerbing marks visible on the nearside wheels.

Inside, the grey patterned cloth interior is believed to be entirely original and presents superbly. There are no rips or tears in the material, and no heavy wear or discolouration either. Its steering wheel and gear lever are in good order, and all of the switchgear is undamaged. The car even retains a period-correct Panasonic radio cassette player. Its rear seats present well, as does the boot area with a clean and tidy parcel shelf. The only fault reported by the vendor is that the heater is currently not working.

Last serviced in March 2020 at 33,104 miles at Kwik-Fit, this consisted of an oil and filter change. In January 2018 at 32,068 miles, a VW specialist carried out a cambelt replacement service. There is stamped history on file up to 8,337 miles in August 1995, and online MOT records pick up in 2006 at 25,493 miles, through to the present day. While there is a gap in the history file, the vendor understands it was owned by a mechanic who carried out maintenance on the car himself during that period.

Currently recorded as SORN, the last MOT was undertaken on 28 March 2020 at 33,104 miles with advisories for some corrosion to the steering and suspension components, coil springs and brake hose ferrules, as well as a minor oil leak. Fitted with Goodyear Eagle NCT5 tyres on the front and Pirelli P600 on the rear, they have around 4mm and 5mm of tread respectively.

Supplied with its original Volkswagen owner’s manual and wallet, it also retains the stamped service record showing maintenance over the last three years.

This VW Golf Mk2 Driver is a smart modern classic, presented in highly original condition and evidently with very low mileage. While it has been used sparingly throughout its life to date, it has covered barely 100 miles since its last service and also benefits from a recent cambelt replacement – so it is ready to drive and enjoy.
