1990 RENAULT ALPINE GTA

KEY FACTS

• A very good example from the Renault Alpine GTA’s final model year, before the introduction of the A610 in 1991.
• Under the bonnet is the carburettor-fed 2.9-litre ‘PRV’ V6, coupled to the five-speed manual transmission.
• It was extensively restored over the last 10 years, and benefits from a recent service.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• Originally painted red, this Alpine was purchased as a project car in 2011, when the chassis frame has also been refurbished, but the car was in need of significant attention to the engine and paintwork.
• Over the next four years, it received significant mechanical work, including installation of a rebuilt replacement V6 engine. The car was then acquired by a member of the Renault Alpine Owners Club, who continued the project, investing in further mechanical refurbishment as well as the full repaint, with a colour change from the original red to dark blue.
• In the cabin, it retains the original grey velour upholstery, a Renault/Dolby stereo system, a Phillips amplifier and steering column-mounted volume controls.
• Accompanying the vehicle are the original books, plus a history file comprising a record of the restoration and some routine servicing.

CONDITION

• No known bodywork damage.
• The fresh paintwork was completed in 2017, at a cost of around £3,000, and now presents with just a few small marks on the front end and sills, having covered around 4,000 miles on the road since then.
• A few scratches can be seen on the plastic trim which surrounds the door locks, and the black aerial base appears to be slightly warped.
• The vendor notes that the nearside rear alloy would benefit from a refurbishment due to a kerbing graze, but the other three wheels are in great shape.
• Inside, its grey velour upholstery is entirely original, and has some minor age-related fading but no significant wear or damage.
• The steering wheel is scratched and slightly discoloured at the main contact points, and the gear shift gaiter is worn.
• No electrical faults have been detected.
• The most recent MOT test was 24 February 2021 at 70,054 miles, which was a clean pass with no advisories or defects.

SERVICE HISTORY

• Its last service was undertaken in March 2020, with renewal of the engine oil and fitment of a new inner track rod.
• Previous mechanical maintenance and refurbishment was performed towards the tail end of the restoration in 2017 at a cost of over £7,000.

SUMMARY

This Renault Alpine GTA is an unusual modern classic sports car, which has been extensively restored and is now in impressive condition. Accompanied by its original book set from 1990 and refinished in a smart dark blue hue, this is a well-presented example of a rarely seen model, which would make a head-turning addition to any collection.
