This Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Targa is a handsome 911 presented in good order, which could make a great modern classic daily driver, or could be used as a solid donor car for a bespoke backdating project. Under the engine lid is an air-cooled 3.6-litre flat-six, producing around 247bhp in stock form, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 118,108 miles.

First registered in the UK in February 1990, there are 10 previous registered keepers on the log book. The current owner acquired the car around eight months ago, but is paring down his significant collection, so is offering this 911 for sale to another enthusiast.

Its bodywork appears to be in good condition, with flush shut lines and consistent gaps around the panels. The black paint finish also presents well overall, and has almost certainly received some remedial attention in the past. Today, it presents how you would expect an unrestored car of this age and mileage to appear, with minor chips, superficial scratches and hairline cracks in places.

Overall, it remains a smart 911, though there is a small patch of bubbling behind the nearside rear wheel arch, and some cracks in the rear reflector. The front indicator lens elements have been swapped to the clear style, and the car appears to be fitted with a lower-riding sport suspension kit. It rides on 17-inch ‘Cup’ style alloy wheels, which are in great shape.

In the cabin, there are sport seats upholstered in Linen leather with black piping. The seat leather is in very good condition, with only minor discolouration and wear, while more noticeable wear is apparent on the gear knob. Some discolouration is also evident on the plastic door pulls, while the rest of the door panels present well, as do the rear seats. The car is fitted with an aftermarket stereo head unit and upgraded speakers. There are no known electrical faults, and no warning lights reported by the seller.

While there is not a comprehensive service history record with this 964, the original stamped maintenance record remains with the car, showing that it had covered more than 88,000 miles by the time it was 10 years old. Furthermore, it shows that the car was serviced in Cologne in 1991 and 1995, which suggests an early owner either lived there or was commuting regularly between the UK and Germany. The service book states that the engine was rebuilt at approximately 108,000 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 22 September 2020 at 117,834 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories. In fact, over the last 14 years and 16,000 miles, it has only failed tests in 2006 and 2007 on minor issues. Furthermore, there has never been any MOT warning or advisory during this 14-year period about chassis corrosion, which is another good indicator as to its condition. The wheels are shod in Bridgestone Potenza tyres at the rear and Kumho Ecsta tyres at the front, which are all reported to be in good condition.

Accompanying the car is the original driver’s manual and stamped service record booklet, along with two sets of keys and a handful of previous MOT certificates.

This Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Targa is described by the seller as being a good, honest car that is ideal for daily use or potentially for a backdate project. Four-wheel drive gives this 911 even broader capability for all-season use, making it a great choice for road trips on the continent as well. Whether the intention is to use this car as the foundation for something more bespoke, or simply to enjoy it as a characterful air-cooled classic, it should prove to be a sound purchase for the next owner.

The description of this auction lot is, to the best of the seller's knowledge, accurate and not misleading. Collecting Cars requests a range of detail about the lot from the seller, and performs a level of due diligence through HPI checks and MOT history. However, bidders must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of the description, and conduct any research they feel is necessary before committing to a bid. Please see our Terms and Conditions for full details.

All UK-registered cars and motorbikes on Collecting Cars are run through an online HPI check. This vehicle shows no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and has no finance owing.

Nice looking car. Have the past MOT advisories been done which are all within last 2 years 500 miles:-
Nearside Front Anti-roll bar ball joint dust cover severely deteriorated
Nearside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
Offside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
Nearside Rear Shock absorbers light misting of oil or has limited damping effect (5.3.2 (b))
Importantly is the engine oil tight or having any slight weaping which is common on the 964's (apart from the writing in service book is there any receipts for the engine re-build at 108k as again most 964's done 80k onwards).
Cheers Drew

Hi John, the roof is dry and makes not more noise than they usually do. Comes on and off easily and mechanism all good.
You are welcome to view.

Hi. Is the roof in good condition? Does it leak in the rain or make any noises whilst driving?
