1990 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.9 LIMITED EDITION

This Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Limited Edition is a great example of the quintessential 1980s hot hatch, which benefits from a recent major service at renowned GTI specialist Skip Brown. Up front resides the character 126bhp four-cylinder engine, driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer reads 87,425 miles.

This UK-market example was initially registered on 1 August 1990, with seven previous keepers registered on the logbook. The current vendor has owned and enjoyed this Peugeot for the past seven months.

As a ‘Limited Edition’ model, this is one of 1,200 GTIs manufactured equally in the Miami Blue and Sorrento Green hues, and divided between the 1.6 and 1.9 engines. This example is therefore one of the 300 green 1.9 GTIs built, and is equipped with power steering and a full grey leather interior. After 1990, these colours were added to the colour range for regular 205 GTIs.

Resplendent in Sorrento Green metallic, this 205 is generally in good cosmetic condition. There is a small scratch visible in the middle of the tailgate, with a light scratch also seen on the passenger side rear quarter. Some minor bubbling is also apparent under the paintwork around the rear screen. The vendor states that the car was registered as being damaged in 1992, which may have been why the offside front wing has previously been replaced. However, the car is HPI clear today, with no insurance database markers.

The front end is largely free of stone chipping, with only minor scuffs and marks visible on the front bumper, its trim and the passenger-side mirror. The rear bumper shows signs of remedial works, with minor cracking visible in its finish. Cracks in the paintwork are also visible above the driver’s side passenger window, but overall the finish is sound given the car’s age.

Fitted with the optional sunroof, this opens and closes as expected and remains in good order. The 205 retains its original 15-inch alloy wheels, which have some minor chips and grazes around the rims.

Inside, the unfussy cabin of this 205 remains in largely original condition. The plastic dashboard and its switchgear have resisted cracking or discolouration, while the steering wheel and gear knob are also free of substantial wear. The model-specific grey leather seats are also free of tears or rips to their upholstery, and just show minor wear and creasing throughout.

The vendor states that the heater blowers are not fully operative. As a workaround, his preferred garage has fitted a toggle switch on the dashboard to enable them to work at full power when flipped. The Clarion stereo is original to the car but is not working, with the vendor believing that only a code is required to rectify this.

In July 2020, the car was sent to recognised 205 GTI specialist Skip Brown for a full inspection and overhaul. Here, a comprehensive service was carried out, with a new cambelt and tensioner kit, new water pump, a full engine oil and filter change, fresh spark plugs, a replacement air filter, and a new battery. In August 2020, the cylinder head was also refurbished at Skip Brown, with new cam followers, checked and adjusted clearances, and renewed seals. The vendor advises that the car would benefit from another 60 miles or so of ‘running-in’ mileage on the engine following the work.

The most recent MOT test was on 24 July 2020 at 87,231 miles. This was a first-time pass with zero advisories, with its previous MOT to this one being carried out in June 2013. The vendor states that the car has spent much of the last decade in storage, and it has been driven sparingly since then. Shod in a matching set of Falken tyres all round, these remain in good condition with no damage to their sidewalls and ample tread remaining.

This Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Limited Edition is a highly useable example of the lauded ‘everyman’ performance car. Offering a high degree of originality, relative rarity and a recent major service from one of the top 205 GTI specialists, it would be a fun addition to a collection of modern classics, and a beguiling steer on the next owner’s favourite B-roads.
